The following is not meant as a list of complaints, but rather a (hopefully) humorous account.
You know you're in small-town Japan when ...
1. Locals refer to "Gusto" as the "best restaurant in town."
2. You call the local pizza place and before you say a word, they ask if you want "the usual."
3. Kindergarten kids you've never met yell out your name when you pass by their school.
4. The only other white guy on a bicycle is the Mormon missionary.
5. People "heard" about your latest vacation to wherever, despite the fact you never told anyone where you were going.
6. You've taught members of the same family at elementary, JHS, and HS.
7. Workers in the bread shop inside the local supermarket track you down to tell you the bread you like will be finished baking in 6 minutes.
8. There is no movie theater, but ...
9. there are a disproportionate number of hostess bars.
10. An old bike you never registered and try to ditch gets "discovered" by the police and they call you at home to tell you they found it.[/i]

<heh>

If you have a Gusto or pizza (or Bikuri Donkey or whatever) place then you *don't* live in a small town in Japan.

A small town in Japan is
-when they turn the only traffic light in the area off at 9pm every night
-when the town Emergency PA system announces that the vege shop has fresh daikon in
-when the mayor makes an apology for being late to the enkai because he hadn't finished plowing his fields
-not even mentioned on the local maps, let alone the NaviMaps
-the cows outnumber the citizens *and* are in better health *and* younger
