My employer has been deducting income tax and not pension from my salary. Is it possible to get an income tax refund when I leave Japan? And, if so, how?
When I asked my manager, she informed me that the school would get a refund at the end of the year. Since, I would no longer be in Japan, it would be impossible for me to collect on the refund. |

You can not claim a tax refund of all your taxes but you can claim a refund of the difference between what you owe the tax department and what your employer has been taking out i.e. if they take out too much you can file a return and claim a refund. If you dont file you dont get anything
You can not claim pension out of your taxes if you have not been paying monthly premiums either. Pension refund is claimed AFTER you leave the country anyway and is separate from your taxes. Govt will remit pension refunds overseas through the social welfare office in your area.
Your tax department will be able to tell you if they will remit funds overseas but they will probably take out the bank charges first. Best idea is file your own return, and not through your employer, as what will happen probably is they will file your return and keep the refund with them as the recipient, if you are not in Japan to collect it. |
