Whats up Tigger. Ill be there tomorrow so see you soon.
Do any of you who teach in Spain take many Spanish classes as well? Im wondering how well teaching and formal study will fit together. I really want to study Spanish mostly, but I have to support myself somehow. |

Tomorrow, huh? You have everything lined up?
I'm still in Innsbruck Austria for the next two weeks. Just too lazy to temporarily change my location on this profile. Be back in Castellon at the end of this month.
So what all did you arrange in Valencia? There are definitely language schools around, but couldn't tell you too much about them, as I haven't looked into them myself. |

As a veteran of Valencia from the days of Franco and having written various posts here on Dave's forums, may I recommend the Hispanic Studies program at the University of Valencia, Faculty of Arts/Letters, especially offered to foreign students. The program is offered in most of the Spanish universities. The program typically offers a grammer class, literature, history of art, geography, history of Spain. You have the same faculty as the Spanish students and being that the universities are state supported, the tuition is very low. Professors are excellent as they must compete in a nationwide examination for any faculty position, called an opposicion exam.
At the time I went, about $50 US for the entire year. Matirculation is simple for this program, no red tape. I enrolled in January, in the summertime, and again the following year. Had the US GI BIll which paid for it. Although I haven't been in touch in years, I presume it is still available. No obligation to take any exams unless you want to get the diploma. No matter what, you get a student ID and can go to the university bar and get other privileges, like a cheap flight out of Spain when you want to go home as you are a registered student in Spain.
The classes at the university are in the morning so if you want to teach English, that activity is usually one in the afternoons and evenings, so it works out well with teaching schedule. Also gives you a chance to meet a lot of people, students from many places.
However, lectures are in Spanish and in the grammer classes, you'll definitely be corrected if you pronounce anything in Latin American Spanish. Sort of like the Oxford of Spain. So you say "thervatha" instead of servasa for cerveza. (beer)
If you wish to do language school type of thing, there are options in Valencia like Berlitz, etc. I taught English at the Centro de Estudios Norteamericanos, but director or others I worked with are no longer there.
They typically hired teachers from the US. Be prepared for low wages!
Really need a second income to survive like I had with the US GI Bill or some personal resources.
Hope this helps. Think I recall the Hispanic Studies Program began in late September, early October. You can check that out if interested. |

I'm coming to Valencia on Monday, 20th of Sept. I've been living in Spain for a few years (Barcelona, Seville) and even thought I don't know Valencia I'm going to give it a try. Email me here if you fancy meeting up.
P.S. Like your D.J. kitty. |
