Ni hao Japan. I have been teaching in China for a couple of years. Prior, I taught in the Air force Plenty of BS degrees, never finished my MA.
I would like to teach in Japan for at least one year. Of course, that's what I said about china, and I am still here. Right now my ideal would be working at a semi-rural high school near Sapparo near the ocean.

I prefer high school, college. It seems teaching at a college may be unlikely?

One thought was to come to Japan straight from China. I noticed Westgate has 3 month contracts. If I came in June, July August, would it be pretty easy/difficult to find a job at a high school for the rest of the year?

How hot is Hokkaido in the summer? (Or should I ask how cold in the winter?)

I was looking into the JET program, but it seems there is a snag; Interviews applications must take place in your home country? Is it possible to apply from China?

I realize (I believe) that it is too late for the next school year. If I came to Japan on a Westgate 3 month deal, would it be possible to find a high school job, or would I be relegated to the language school heap?

All advice welcomed, even the sarcastic stuff Twisted Evil

With JET, you can only apply from China if you are a Chinese national who is applying to teach Chinese language and culture. You must interview in whatever country you hold a passport for and plan to represent during your time in the programme. If you got here in June, you might be able to find September work, as a lot of foreign instructors seem to go home around the summer break, and thir schools will need to hire replacements at that time.

I can't tell you much about Hokkaido- I'm at the opposite end of the country in Kyushu. Perhaps Glenski can tell you a bit more about this region?

College is very unlikely. Universities require a master's degree plus publications for full-time jobs. No publications seem to be needed for part-time work, but you usually need the master's for PT work, too.

High school may be an option for you, especially since you have had experience teaching. No promises, though.

Call Westgate and see what their typical hiring plans that time of year are. I think Westgate only hires people for university slots, but I haven't seen their site for a while.

High schools have 2-4 weeks of vacation in August, so I wouldn't expect to teach much then.

I've been in Sapporo for 5 years. Summers are very pleasant. Highs are about 25-30 degrees C. Winters have very heavy snow, and lows vary with location on Hokkaido, from -15 to -30C. Sapporo is on the warmer side. (None of these take into account wind chill.)
