I just arrived in Taipei about two weeks ago. I've been looking for work morning, noon, and night. So now I need to unwind just a bit. I saw a movie last week, but what other kinds of 'trouble' can I get into Very Happy . Safely of course. I'm an african american female, so I draw enough attention already.

Welcome to Taiwan! I've only been in the ROC for four months, but I've found there's plenty to do in Taipei...

I guess it depends on what kinda of atmosphere you're looking for. A good place to start would be www.forumosa.com There's a pretty good message board with people debating the merits of this or that club.

I like the following pubs:
The Voice, Nanjing E. Rd, Sec. 3, Lane 223 #55.: Cheapest pub in town, very friendly owner. You get TWO Budweisers, Tigers, Carlsburgs, or Taiwan Beers for a measly NT$150. It doesn't get any cheaper unless you go to the 7-11.
DV8: Friendly, chill atmosphere where I satisfy my addiction the Chimay Blue Belgian ale. Good music, pool table downstairs, relaxed people. It's near Guting Station...not sure the exact address...you can find that at forumosa.
45s: Also a friendly chill atmosphere, near Guting Station.
Living Room: Fantastic lounge bar with great jazz/funk music, spoken word, and other such stuff for culture vultures. Very cool owner. On Nanjing Dong Lu Section 4 and 5 border. Again, don't have the address...you should find it on forumosa.
Citizen Kane: Nice, relaxing lounge as well. Good music.

I also enjoy hanging at two nice bowling alleys, if that gives you any indication of the classy company I keep. One is near the Jiantan Station, the other near Zhongxiao Dunhua. I'm terrible with directions and addresses...maybe someone here could help out?

Also...baseball! It's fun to cheer against Taiwan's version of those D*mn Yankees, the Brother Elephants...while you're knocking back NT$40 cans of Taiwan with your hotdog. They sometimes run out of hotdog buns, however.

Anyone else here have any pub recommendations?? I myself am looking to diversify my pub crawl...

Oh yeah. Brass Monkey. Eh. Hit or miss. Somedays it's okay...the Vegetable Masala rocks...but other days it's downright obnoxious.

Not much into the "disco" scene...I hear Carnegies, Ministry of Sound, and Roxy are quite the meat markets, but I haven't checked it out. Not my scene.

good luck,
C.R.

(didn't mean for my sign off to be so abrupt...just seeing if it works for me as well as it does for Mr. Aristotle Wink )

I would well recomment Carnnegies for a good nice out, whether you are into the meat market scene or not, but forget about Roxy- it's crap, watch your back and wallet with regards to some of the local regulars, and watch out for the taxi drivers outside.
Ki.
