Greetings! I have newly arrived to China to teach at the Nanjing University of Science and Technology. I am extremely excited about the teaching position, but I am also interested in getting involved elsewhere in Nanjing--both for the experience and (hopefully) to make a bit of extra travel money. I'm wondering what advice others have for finding additional part-time work in China? Tutoring, writing, etc? Is it a bad idea to try to pick up additional work?

I would especially like to know if anyone has done any free-lance writing or editing. I worked for a magazine prior to coming here and would love to somehow pursue interests in journalism and writing while in China.

Thee are expat-targeted mags just about anywhere in China: CITYTALK, That's Beijing, to name but two Peking-based ones. Most have websites as well.
The CHINA DAILY has a number of publications in various cities - including Shanghai; freelancing may be possible (though not to CD itself).

Apart from That's mags, most accept just about any write-up, and that's why you see a lot of unreadable stuff anyway! That's for instance quite definitely the case with GUANGZHOU TODAY and SHENZHEN DAILY.
Heavy-handedness characterises their editorial work!
