The MLI (actually the Ministry of Ed) policy of failing to honor DL degrees is no more. (If you are there, talk to a coordinator or an officer for confirmation.) This decision appears to be unrelated to the pending change in administrative personnel -- but who knows?

So far this year, the MLI has rescinded its policy prohibiting the carryover of vacation days from year to year, has hired a new academic director, is now honoring DL degrees, and is pulling out some of its military staff and transferring some administrative control to HCT. New teachers are staying in the somewhat posh Officers' Club with three squares a day, have received a very warm welcome from older staff, and are receiving an extensive orientation that seems to be going smoothly.

Of course there are problems; and, of course, there are solutions.

So how do you find MLI, BD? I take it from your knowledge you're now there?

It would be premature of me to make a definitive judgment at this point. There is ample evidence that the all of the bitc*ing is based in fact, but I also believe there has been a lot of exaggeration and over-generalization on eslcafe.com. A very large proportion of the people working at the MLI appear to be smart, competent, friendly, helpful, very likable, and dedicated to doing a better-than-good job; there is also a smattering of dimmer bulbs, and a handful of doomsayers. The bureaucracy at GHQ grinds on slowly, as bureaucracies do, but I see no evidence of malevolence or of inordinate (for the area) neglect. I see nothing that suggests that coming here is dangerous, or stupid, or a mistake, or in any way less advisable than going to one of the universities. There are lots of changes in the works, and I assume that some will increase the comfort level while others will decrease it. I will surely keep you posted.
