Hi - has anybody done this without leaving Japan?

I've heard it can be done but how and what is needed?

Any help would be appreciated, as usual.

I have searched but found nothing.

I have not done this, but from the accounts that I've read, you simply need to present yourself to immigration before the tourist status expires, provide a good explanation as to why you want to stay longer, and prove that you have sufficient funds to do this. "Good explanation" is subjective and judged differently by every immigration official.
