I am looking for some advice regarding dependent visas and Nagoya eikaiwas. I am currently working for a small Nagoya eikaiwa and my fiancee is coming to join me in Japan after we are married this Christmas. We are both Canadian citizens with B.A. degrees and TEFL Certification. My questions are these:

We are hoping he'll find a job before December, but failing that we want to apply for a dependent visa for him. How far in advance do we need to apply for the dependant visa? What documents do we need? And can anyone recommend some reputable schools in the Nagoya area...preferably in the Midori-ku...Tempaku area?

Also, my fiancee is not opposed to working for Nova...we understand that many negative things have been said about it, but we've also heard as many positive things as well. If he does apply there, is it better to leave out his TEFL certification on his application? I've heard they look for people who are rather green, that they can mould to their format. Is this true? Also, what are the chances they would be willing to place him in Nagoya - at his request?...obviously because I'm already here and set up with a great job and a great apartment. We really don't want to have to give up a good thing.

Any insight you could provide regarding our situation would be much appreciated!!! I have been here less than a year now so there is still so much I don't know. Thanks everyone!

Just a bit of advice. You cannot work on a dependent visa alone. You also have to file separate documentation to get permission to work.

And, with all of that, being on a dependent visa allows only part-time work.

Since your fiancee has a degree and TEFL certification, I would guess that he would rather work full-time. Why not come on a working holiday visa first? Then, he could convert that to a work visa if he wants to. You can work full-time on either one, but the work visa gets renewed after a year, while the WHV does not.

These two statements really confuse me. What exactly are the logistics here? If he comes to join you after Christmas, how can he find a job before December?

As for NOVA and his TEFL certification, leave it on the resume. Probably the most important things about interviewing for places like NOVA are to show enthusiasm for working here, as well as to adapting to a foreign culture, and somehow showing that you ARE adaptable. Tout the certificate, but let them know you are very willing to follow whatever teaching format they have. If you show that you actually know they have one, that'll mean you have done some homework on the employer, and in my book that's a plus for any candidate.

Getting placed in Nagoya depends on whether the branch offices there have openings. The best you can do is explain why you want to be placed there and hope for the best. No guarantees beyond that.

For documentation on the dependent visa, take the time to call or visit immigration and ask.

My apologies Glenski on not being clear...it was 1am when I wrote the post.

The hope was that he could secure a position before December with a starting date in January/February. Then he could get his own work visa before we depart for Japan after the New Year...thus eliminating the need for a WHV or a dependent visa.

However, failing that...we thought the dependent visa was the better option because it doesn't require you to bring a stack of cash with you like the WHV does. I believe Japan requires Canadians to have $2500.00 in order to be eligible. Moreover, I heard that it was easy to have a dependent visa converted to a work visa later. Am I wrong on this?

Also, thank you for the Nova information it was most helpful!

It will take you 6-8 weeks after getting hired until you get your visa. If you apply in December you wont get a visa till mid February or early March.

You will still need enough for two people to live on in the first month. Glenski has info on initial set up costs such as key money etc but you are still paying for two people. If you have a degree it shouldnt be a problem finding work on a dependent visa though.

You can change the visa over by applying for a change of status at the immigration desk. Just as long as you show you qualify by showing your degree and arranging sponsorship of your visa from your employer it's really just a formality.

I think it's much more easier to get a WHV & upgrade it to a working visa. I did that. To get my WHV, it only took 1 week, they ppl at the Japanese embassy in dt Toronto actually helped me to get one.

To change status from a WHV to a working visa is even easier (and less paper work). They didn't even need me to bring a photo, and it took 4 days for them to mail the pick-up notice to me. You'll need to pay 4000yen for the renewal I think.

Yes, you'll need $2500.00 in traveler cheques to apply for a WHV, but that doesn't mean you'll need to use them all! Believe me, when you first get here, you'll need to use some money to settle in, & to feel a little more safe, cuz ppl here normally uses cash only. And whatever you don't use, just bring them back to Canada & cash them. Traveler cheques never expire.
