I am a recently qualified CELTA teacher currently working in central Japan (with visa). One thing I am keen to do after my present contract ends is to work in Kagoshima in Kyushu (becuase of friends and holiday trips etc).

I am planning a trip to Kagoshima in the next month or so when I can start to research the English teaching situation there. I believe the city has a population of about 500, 000. I would be intersted to hear if people think that finding a job there is a realistic ambition (or is too small a city to support a large number of English teaching jobs? do you need some local connections first? etc), or from anyone who has some thoughts or comments on the city. At this stage, I am just asking a general question for future reference really so I hope no one thinks I am about to embark on a conspiracy to steal their job! Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

Hello:

Well, I live just outside the city on the JET program. Yeah, the city has about 500,000 people. The main street is Tenmonkon (where the street car goes) and everything is right there. You really do not need to go anyplace else.

I know Aeon and some of the others do advertise here so there must be some jobs but I cannot tell you too much about it. There is a good number of expats from all over here so there is not shortage of Westerners if you want to hang with them. Hot as hell in the summer but nice the rest of the year. There are some interesting things to see around the city (Chiran has a Kamikaze museum and Ibusuki is famous for its Onsen baths).

Overall, you could do worse...

Kagoshima is a big city, but plays like a small town. The city itself has so little to offer considering its size, you'd think you were in a country town. As previously posted, hot as hell in the summer, but relatively mild winters. If you come to Kyushu I wouldn't recommend Kago City. It has all the trappings of a big city (i.e. traffic) without any of the benefits (restaurant selection, shopping, etc.).

Do people eat horsemeat in Japan, lovechild?
Just curious, I know they eat dog in Korea but I've never heard of anyone eating horsemeat before.
