Hi,

As some may know I'm looking for a job in Japan at teh moment. A lot are squeezing the salary down to 230000 or less!

Even for few hours it's not enough for Tokyo.

There are plenty of salaries quoted in teh range 250-270000 yen and that I think is fair (though still hardly a lot of money). But 230 000, with no housing help or anything is frankly asking for people to bail at teh first hint of something better.

What do people think is the lowest pay anybody should accept? Is it entirely up to people to take a low wage if tey need it or is there a minimum we should all hold out for as a standard?

Personally I don't think anyone should be working full time for less than 250 000, with key money if they want it.

I've seen even lower salaries--200,000 and 180,000. They're so low they're offensive! I think, though, that as long as there is a ready supply of labor (which there will be for quite some time, as many teachers are not in it for the long haul and merely want to take some time off from life back home, travel, etc.), schools will keep paying as little as they possibly can. I get the impression (and this is only an impression, not based on firsthand experience since I don't work for an eikaiwa) that they just don't value us and they know we're easily replaced.
