Hi, guys, just sitting in my place in Beijing. Work has been cancelled and who can say when it will be revived. Oops, bad choice of words perhaps! Anyway, it is seriously time to start considering a next step.
As I have lived and done EFL in Japan I am seriously considering returning. I'd appreciate advice on starting up there again. Been away a while and can't say I am completely up to date.
Where are most jobs for experienced teachers available? (I also have an MBA.) Are jobs paying more than 250,000 available?
If someone has any time on his/her hands your comments would be greatly appreciated.

An MBA won't really afford you any opportunity to teach English.
Most jobs will pay 250,000 to 300,000 yen/month.
Where are most jobs? Without trying to sound sarcastic, they are in the bigger cities. If you were asking about specific companies, the biggest ones are the chain language schools: NOVA, GEOS, ECC, and AEON. Of course, there's always the JET program. |

Not with an MBA there isn't. Someone with a qualification like that (let alone a person that's been out working too) will probably be rejected unless they can really show some reason they would make a good candidate: they don't tend to take people with 'career' degrees. |

With an MBA you might be surprised what opportunities you might find in a place like Tokyo.
Definitely worth a look.
Lots of High Schools would be interested in you, conversation schools would be interested in you as well. You could probably find lucrative part time work at these places in Tokyo.
You'd also find opportunities teaching corporate English classes in Tokyo for companies like FORUM who pay about Y4,000/hour. GLOVA also can pay well. I had one job that paid me Y8,000 per 1.5 hour lesson. So, the money isn't too bad.
Check out the Tokyo School Board. Teaching part time in High Schools for Y6,500 per hour.
Business Colleges in the Tokyo area might also have opportunities. for someone with your experiences and education.
Teaching GMAT and writing courses through Princeton and Kaplan will be possible opportunites for you as well. Money is very good at these places. But you'll need an MBA or descent GMAT score to gain access to these positions.
Depending on how you arrange your schedule and and how many hours/days you work a week, it's possible to make Y360,000 - Y500,000 a month in a city like Tokyo, especially with your skills and experiences.
People with business skills and experience would be highly sought after IMO by those companies who specialize in teaching corporate English classes. |
