Yup, that's right - I'm going to be your token newbie of the day, having no teaching experience to speak of other than the CELTA a couple of months back. I'm currently playing cat and mouse with a number of Chinese public universities, as from what I understand, they offer the best chance of good conditions and 'meaningful' employment in the country. I'm not going to list the terms and conditions as I can pretty much figure that out myself (besides, they're pretty consistent).
Just looking for any reports on the teaching atmosphere at these unis and particularly in the case of Leshan & Xianyang, for which there seems to be very little information that doesn't refer to clay figures or buddhas (excellent as I'm sure they are of course), general city life.
Dalian Medical University
Shaanxi University of Science & Technology, Xianyang (20 km from Xi'an)
Beijing University of Chemical Technology
Chengdu University of Technology - Leshan Campus (College of Engineering)
Intensive Language Training Centre - Sichuan University, Chengdu
Much appreciated folks. Just don't steal any of those jobs now......

The only cities I know anything about are Dalian and Beijing, both of which have a lot of foreigners residing in them.
From what I am told, Beijing is immaculate compared with the rest of China, and Dalian is a partier's paradise.
Dalian for the most part has the best climate "just like home" in China if you're from the northern US, Britain, or Canada.
My only advice is read your contract carefully, and do not accept a contract with a low wage because you'll be spending a whole year living off of rice and veggies while all your friends around you have the best cell phone, the best apartment, and eat out every night in nice restaurants. |

I've taught Sichuan U. students privately ... good students ... nothing bad mentioned about the university. S.U. is the No.1 university, but Chengdu ... now, that's another thing! |

I've just been browsing through a few threads, and come across this comment, which struck me as a little strange, 'cos I've been here for two weeks and I've found absolutely no evidence of anything at all happening after 9pm! Can anybody tell me what I'm missing? |

When I was there last year Noah's Ark was pretty cool (a bar just behind Renmin Guangchang), and there was also Ma Ke Wei's (Mak's? I can't remember...) just off Zhongshan Guangchang- they were both popular expat (plus Chinese) bars, but there were others. There was a whole street of vaguely dodgy-looking bars further north, forgotten where....
Plus there must be a million karaoke places, surely? You'll require a large number of inebriated Chinese people to enjoy them, but they go on later than 9. Finally, for true late-night, western style, expensive drinks and loud music there are the nightclubs- Banana and Banana 2 stick in the mind, if only because of the name...
I'm not there now, obviously, but even if these places have all vanished there must be others. Unless, as in Changzhou, they've enforced a 9pm curfew in response to repeated zombie incidents. |
