Hi Everyone,
My name is Dom and I live in South Africa. I have been to Japan twice
before on holiday. My fiance and I would love to come work in Japan next year. I know that the only job you can get to attain a visa is teaching english. The problem is my fiance has a degree but I don't. I've read it is possible to get a teaching job without a degree.... does anyone have any thoughts..
But now my main question is about a cultural visa. I've heard you can get a cultural visa by studying eg. a martial art. Also on a cultural visa you can
work for a few hours a week. Well I do kung fu but I'm battling to find a kung fu school based in Tokyo on the internet...
Does anyone out there know anything about this way of gettng into Japan.
Many thanks!

If you are married you can apply for a dependent visa. If you are not married yet you can't use her visa to come here on that.
Culture visa is a possibility but you need to show you have enough to support yourself and have a sponsor of your visa. You can work part time (I assume once you get permission, because officially culture visa is a non-working visa) to provide some of your living expenses.
Several visas you can get a job teaching in Japan without needing a degree- its just a question if you qualify for any of them.... |

What if you come into Japan with a cultural visa or work holiday visa and get married in Japan. Can you change it to a dependent visa within Japan, or do you have to leave the country? Do they even have like chapels where people can get married like vegas or can people go to city hall? |

You can change your visa status over in Japan but remember these are non working visas. You have to ask permission from immigration to work on a dependent visa and this is decided on a case by case basis. You can change your visa at immigration office. If you are caught working without permission you can be asked to leave the country and be deported so this is quite important.
There are chapels and churchs in Japan, but such weddings are not legally recognised in the eyes of the law. For a wedding to be recognised in Japan most Japanese go to city hall to register their wedding- each Japanese person has a family register and the name is added to the register (koseki) of their spouse. The only problem is foreigners by law can not have a koseki- only Japanese can. You can get married with a ceremony etc but it wont be recognised legally unless you go to your embassy. What you have to do is contact the embassy or consulate and get forms saying that you are legally married, you have not been married before and present them to the city office/immigration. You can probably have a civil wedding at your embassy but you would have to check. |

When a foreign national gets married in Japan, the following procedures must be completed. However, as there are more than 200 countries and regions throughout the world, these procedures may not apply to everyone. Confirm this with the representative of your country or region in Japan (embassy, consulate) before initiating any procedures.
?When two foreign nationals get married
It is not necessary, but you can follow Japanese procedures to register your marriage. In this case, submit a marriage report and the legal documents issued by your home country's embassy stating that you are eligible for marriage. Two sets of documents, one for each spouse, are necessary.
*Eligibility for marriage certificate
This is an official document which proves that the applicant, in accordance with the law in their home country, is eligible for marriage. Because the name of the document differs from country to country, please check with your government's representative in Japan.
?Note that a translation of any documents written in a foreign language must be attached with the name of the person who translated it. |
