I'm just curious. For the guys and gals out there who have been teaching a while. Where do you plan to retire? If like me you've been away from the homeland for a fair amount of time do you have a country in mind for retirement? A place where you can see yourself after you have stopped teaching. The longer I avoid the Uk the harder it is to think of returning. Of course TEFL isn't know for it's comprehensive pension plans so affordable is probably the key word for most teachers out there. But then again how many of you plan to rest your weary bones back in the motherland? |

I am not planning on going back, yet I doubt I can spend my last days in China - I wouldn't trust their docs and nurses, and besides, there aren't any old-age service providers yet. Old age here is a scary nightmare for people without dependents!
I think I might go somewhere else - Russia perhaps? They ought to have that kind of service anyway.
BUt maybe not; I would be hankering after Asia's sun! I am thinking of Indonesia, the Philippines, Mauritius, Seychelles. |

I have no plans to go back home to Canada so I will probably teach here in Japan until I die or win the big one on the lottery... |

Retirement? Can I get through Xmas before I start thinking about that? Joking....
I am thinking Australia or home (Canada). I love HK but I would not want to stay here in my golden years. However, I am not retiring until I am a very rich woman, so I don't know when that will happen. 80's, 90's perhaps??? |

Mmmmm, yes that thought is often lingering: where to spend the golden years? Definitely not planning on returning to the U.S.
Around here we tend to think in terms of where we can find our little palm tree. Thailand is nice but probably can't handle being farang forever.
A part of me seems to feel the end of life will be spent in Africa, where we started.

This spring, I saw lots of old people retiring in the Philippines. Generally, the hospitals are good, the cost of living is cheap and people speak English. Not a bad choice. |

In another thread to this Forum, someone mentioned something about Brazil - including a reference to US$ 30 k houses near the beach !
I would like to continue working until I'm 70;but I have no intention of retiring back in Australia.Wouldn't mind spending my last years in Thailand. But wherever I decide to settle down will depend upon a number of factors,eg: availability long-term or permanent residency visas, cost of real estate, whether non-citizens are permitted to own real estate, etc.Someone mentioned the Phillipines - might be worth investigating.
Does anyone know of countries that provide hassle-free permanent residency rights, etc ?

We're thinking about Spain, France, or somewhere on Vancouver Island. Snowbirding appeals, too, from BC or Quebec. The possibilities are exciting, but the thought of being old and stranded out there somewhere is a little scary. |

EXACTLY.
Somehow every time I think of retiring outside of Canada, it makes me sad. But I don't know how I would ever be able to afford it anyway. |
