|
|
I'll be travelling to Japan in July once I finish my contract teaching English in Beijing. I plan on staying for about a week, visiting Osaka and Kyoto before flying back home to Canada for a visit. I've been considering teaching in Japan for a while and was wondering what my chances were of finding work, and where I should look (language schools in the area around Kyoto or Osaka) while I'm there. |

Do you have a University degree? If so then should not be hard to find somthing.

If you are going to apply from Canada then apply to the big four: AEON, GEOS, NOVA, ECC. If you have a University degree its pretty hard to get rejected (some may not agree with that statement though). It will take about 3 - 4 months from the time of your interview to the time you start working in Japan due to getting your hands on a work VISA from Japanese immigration. Plan on being unemployed for a short period if you are going this route (or getting another job in Canada).
I don't know much about finding a job while you are in Japan as I have not tried. Hopefully sombody can shed some light on that for you who has gone through it.
Good Luck |

Hi Tottori-Dood,
Thanks for the reply. I was hoping to find a job while in Kyoto, and then apply for the VISA once I'm back in Canada and then return to Japan and work for a year. I've been working in China for the last year and want to return to Asia, but my heart is set on Japan. I've applied to the big 4, but they require that I apply from Canada, and interview in Toronto.
I was hoping that since I'll be in Japan anyway, that I might be able to find something while I'm there. |

Going by what I have read on this (and other) message boards in the last year or so - it might be hard to do it that way. From what I understand, outfits that hire within Japan usually do so to avoid hassles such as visa sponsorship etc....
Again, I'm not speaking from personal experience so don't let my take on this get you down. It might be totally possible and would not hurt to try.
The only thing that makes me wonder is the VISA process. It takes a long time and I just don't see a school hiring within Japan willing to wait. If they were willing to wait then I don't see why they would not hire abroad.
Hope I helped, and hope some people more experienced with your question post. |

Unless things have changed without me knowing it it is quite possible to enter Japan as a temporary visitor, find a school wiiling to hire you and sponsor you for a resident permit, and work at the school while the permit process wends its way through the bureaucracy. |

I thought that was only possible with a working holiday visa. By the way that might be an option for you if you qualify. If you are from Canada and 30 or under you qualify. |

It's possible on a tourist visa, just rare. |
