Not to get too far ahead of myself (my girlfriend and i aren't scheduled to arrive in Japan untill early next year with ECC), but wanted to get thoughts on favorite two/three day and full week excursions both within the country and outside. We look forward to trying new cuisines, hiking and camping and exploring cultural/tourist sites. With Osaka as our likely home base, where should we go with our vacations and weekends? Looking for specific iteninaries or websites. Also, is it worthwhile to schlep over all our camping gear or are campsites nonexistant? |

Sweetsee, thanks for the tip. Now, are there many campsites that make it worthwhile to bring the gear?

Birddog3344,
Check the Outdoor Japan site. I would bring my stuff but I am a serious camper, average 30 days a year.
Also be prepared for some serious camping ettiquette culture shock.
Unfortunately, I have never camped near Osaka but there are camp-sites all over the place and they cost anywhere from nothing to 10,000 yen a night.
Happy camping! |

Climb Fuji in the day time. The view's amazing at that time. Pitch black at night. Not as cold or wet as everyone says but it's 5-6 hours of blackness. I'd climb in the day if I had to do it again.
Nikko is GREAT! And there are plenty of hotels to stay in but you could also make it a day trip as it's only a two hours from Tokyo.
I'm planning a trip to Okinawa. Cheap as! |

I live in Kyoto / Nara and do a bit of camping (at least once a year for the last couple of years). Plenty of campsites, but as we have a car we have not really considered places accessible by train or for those without a car.. There are whole magazines (in Japanese) that list hundreds of campsites all over Japan so it really depends on whats available to you re access, budget etc.
Plenty of camping shops around to buy gear, and you have to remember you will have a weight limitation on your luggage if you bring too much stuff from home.
What are you specifically looking for in terms of a weekend trip? |

At this point we're up for anything. Like i said, we're interested in hiking/camping trips, but also historic sites, shrines and temples, national parks, beaches, etc. Also, for week-long vacations, I'm wondering if trips to Bali or Thailand are doable. Where have people travelled outside of Japan? |

Konnichiwa:
Well, I had some friends go to Bali for a week last summer. They said it was great and they stayed on a Bungalow on the beach and it was not too expensive.
As for Thailand, I just booked my ticket out of Fukuoka to Bangkok on 12/16 for only 65,000 Yen which is dirt cheap. I don't really know if camping in Thailand would be worth all the hassle as hotels are so cheap there. If you plan on doing a lot of backpacking, then it may behoove you do bring some gear but otherwise... |

I read that camping is not allowed on Mt. Fuji. Is this correct?
dtomchek,
What airline did you book your flight with? |

Correct. And with good reason. The wind up there is insane PLUS there'd be nowhere to throw up a tent. There are plenty of cabins though while not 5 star do their job. |
