What kind of holiday is the Mid-autumn Festival: public, statutory, etc.?

My day off is Wednesday which is the 29th September this time round and it is also the Mid-autumn Festival. No-one at work has mentioned anything about the festival. As a worker, what are my labour rights: do I get a day's extra pay or another day off?

Sorry, I should probably ask the Labour Department people, but I can't speak Cantonese and find that such people make out that they don't understand English very well.

If it helps, I work at a university and just have Wednesday off (along with the students).

An up-date on my post above. I've just been told by one of the receptionists that the Centre is going to be closed on Wednesday 29th September 2004 for the Mid-autumn Festival. I told her that I have Wednesday off anyway and will I get another day off instead or pay, but she said that she doesn't know that I should ask the new supervisor or wifey. So before I ask, any knowledgeable input would be welcome.

Personally, I've always found 'such people' as those that work at the labour dept. quite helpful and able to speak English, but there you go.

In any case, if you don't like speaking to 'such people' the website is in English and Chinese, here is the page with the holiday regulations, it's pretty straightforward and clear:

If your normal day off falls on a public or natonl holiday, it is just bad luck.

Thanks very much indeed for the Labour Department's website link. The boss has agreed that I may have a November holiday (to compensate for 29/09/2004). Whether my salary is deducted for that holiday remains to be seen...
