How do I explain being fired by one of the big four to a potential employer (without lying)? I was let go for basically not bothering with a lot of the pettiness that goes on at this place and opening my mouth one too many times, but my conscience is clear and I know that with the right school I could do a great job, and I want to.

Schools don't check if you got fired from a school. Just put on your resume you worked for "Nova/ECC/whatever" from xxx to xxx. That's it. Suprising, as it's pretty hard to get fired. However, I commend you for not sticking to your guns for what you believe in. Pettiness sucks.

Who asks for references? Almost every interview in Japan that I know of at conversation schools or English teaching jobs look at your education, work experience and ask you questions right there. Sometimes they ask you to do a demo lesson. If you have a valid working visa, you're often 80%.

Don't worry about it. I totally agree with your actions. Some of the companies here need to learn they can't treat people like dirt.

I have shifted a high and never been asked for references. You can show you can do the job at interview. Thats all you need.

They may not ask for references, but if they see less than a year (or find out it was) on your resume, they may ask why you left early.

You can always tell them you and the employer didn't agree on certain methods of teaching or on certain business systems. Look at What Color Is Your Parachute? for some ideas on how to handle this sort of question.
