I am not yet in Turkey, and am a freelance writer. I am thinking of getting TEFL certification, to increase my income possibilities.

First off, other than Via Lingua and CELTA, are there TEFL programs that you recommend?

Also, is it a bad idea to arrive in November? I realize it's better to arrive in September, but I am open to tutoring or offering private lessons -- do you think chances of getting at least part-time work are greatly decreased by arriving in Nov.?

I'm also thinking of doing the online TEFL, because I'd rather not spend $1400 for a TEFL program, and have heard that people get hired as tutors and others with the online degrees. Does anyone know of reputable schools that hire online TEFL holders?

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts on all this!
Cate

IMHO you should go with a CELTA if you want the best employment chances and some classroom experience. dmb usually has that sort of info. It may be possible to get work, though not easy and the pay will be low without cert and it depends on the city. You can get private lessons though if you spread the word properly and they pay well.

Re: the thread about privates, My friends all get MINIMUM 30 million TL per hour for privates but most insist on 40 millionTL p.h. Turkish English teachers also charge about 30. Don't sell yourself short!

PM your email address to me and I can forward you the CELTA course details(and others)planned for this year. I would just post it here but Dave would accuse me of blatant advertising.
