Seriously, I'm stuck here with not much to do at the minute and very little in the way of entertainment except my geetarr and am running very low on things to play. I'm searching the net for new ch00ns but my mind really is blank.

So. People. Whats your favourite songs? Just give me two or three.

Lucky you, most of us scrubs still have to make do with our DVD collections and (the) Internet (porn).

Anyway, I used to learn Stones songs pretty easily from Harmony Central:

As any decent Stones fan knows, Keith Richards is fond of the open G tuning (DBGDG[D] I think), and most of their best songs are built around the same riff. "Honky Tonk Women" and "Dead Flowers" are really cool, easy songs to learn.

OK, if I had my guitar here I'd probably be working on Bob Marley's "Redemption Song."

Learn a little slack-key by listening to Bob Brozeman, Keola Beamer, or the great Gabby Pahinui.

Open G tunings open up a world of blues (and, potentially, slide blues with the use of a cigarette lighter or beer bottle). A lot of the old Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters stuff is compatible with it. (But, you know, I suppose you'd have to like blues music Smile

).

I have my geetar in Open G most of the time.

"Everybody knows" originally Leonard Cohen but I like the Concrete blonde Version better. Try some of the power ballads by Motley Crue as they're pretty interesting to do on an accoustic.

Incidentally, I can't believe I forgot to mention Goldie Lookin' Chain. They are a Welsh Hip Hop collective and, whilst most of the humour probably won't translate, with song titles like "Your mother's got a *beep*(ok then, male organ)" and "Guns don't kill people, rappers do" they have to be worth having a look at for the unitiated. You knows it, clart.

Open G. Ah Yes. It's been so long since I tuned my guitar I think I have forgotten what an in-tune E sounds like. You know how you get used to the way an out of tune guitar sounds and to you it sounds normal?

I can't stand GLC anymore. Sure, when Rappers Kill People first came out it was funny for a week but NME did a feature on them and now every fucking wannabe hipster I know is fauning all over them. And they're not even that good! Same with Libertines. First CD was good.. ok. Don't Look Back was awesome but now the record execs are making a real big deal of this androgynous junkie-chic thing and it's old hat.

I ended up getting the notes for Roxanne by the Police and omg what a tune it is. I've been singing it for almost 48hrs even tho all I know is "ROOXXXAANNEE! You don't have to put on the red light. Every day it seems, somethings on the floor..... RRRRROXXXXAANNNEEE!"

Ok, ok, I laughed out loud at those lyrics. Theyre pretty funny.

I've been in the studio where the libertines were recording to see my mate chris who for some reason hangs out with them (he has libertine tatood on his arm) and i watched pete shooting up. it was just like keith richards, totally unwilling to record anything and the rest of the band sitting around. only keith was a god and this guy is a *beep*.

ive seen kalashnakoff live in Hackney, where I lived last year, i reckon hes one of the best uk rappers by far. and jimmy cliff is a legend.

may i suggest, as the kind of chap who seems to like good music, that you have a look at The Gladiators - Dreadlocks The Time Is Now. top quality ch00nage. or, Sock it to 'Em Soul which is an awesome compliation.

I'm taking a respite from my current obsession with jazz and giving Nick Cave's latest double album a go ('Abatoir Blues'/'Lyre of Orpheus'); first impressions are auspicious for this adventurous album.
