Hello, another newbie here.
I have just received my TESOL certificate and have been posting my resume for work in Thailand. I received a job offer from Siam Computer & Language school but declined it because of the very poor wages. There was a clause in the contract stating that if for some reason the contract was broken, the school could report me to the Thai school board to have me deported. Is this for real? Can they do this?

I don't see why not. In most countries your work and visa status are related. Quitting the job can make you illegal...hence the lovely thing called a visa run. Wouldn't worry much about a clause like that,,, Ask on the Thailand forum.

Sure, why not? The only reason you're getting a work visa is because the school has a job for you that can't be done by a local. If the school fires you and you no longer have a job, it stands to reason you can lose the visa.

Different countries have different rules. In some countries, like Japan, the work visa is yours and if you change jobs, you still have the work visa. In other countries, like Korea and I suspect Thailand, the work visa is tied to your employer. No job is no visa and you would have to leave the country or get another school to sponsor you promptly. Even then I believe you would need to leave the country for the new visa. Makes changing jobs less enticing which is the whole point in the employer's eyes.

I'm not sure how rabbinical law would interpret this situation, but I will say that if you're going to decline teaching jobs in Thailand because of very poor wages, you're probably not going to find a job. Laughing

I doubt they could have you deported, unless they have some dirt on you? And breaking a contract ain't enough IMO! I've heard them play games before with people with fakies, so if is the case....yes they might try and stitch you up!

And in response to some of the other guesse...sorry I mean answers! There is no work Visa in Thailand (rather a Non-imm is needed to obtain a WP on) so what should/would happen is you leave the school, you hand in your WP, you have seven days (or if you can find a new employer you might get a longer extension, but they'll need to be rapid like) to leave the country. The school has sod all to say after that it's an Immigration matter so like I said unless they have dirt on you (and I'm guessing you didn't have a WP with them? As they usually take at least 3-6 months of working before they'll get you one) you should be fine, although you'll need to exit and re-ente if they cancelled your WP, if not IMO you should be fine!
