I am curious about Vietnam and the college or university teaching scene. Does anyone out there have experience at that level? Anyone aware of the qualifications required, the compensation, daily job requirements, and general craziness that such a position there entails?

If so - please share!

I have 13 years experience in teaching EFL in Asia (almost all at the college/university level)- and two Master's degrees - one in Education, the other Business, PGCE in TEFL, etc. Currently teaching at a university in another country - but am about ready for a change - and VN stikes me as interesting. Though Cambodia sounds interesting too . . .

RMIT is the only university I know of that hires and pays foreign teachers well. They only hire locally though and require an education degree or Celta to teach in the English department and a business degree and experience to teach in the business departments. The conditions are fairly good though with a decent salary for about 10-15 teaching hours a week. They hire 3 times a year I believe- roughly september, february, and june.

Thanks GT for your reply. What is considered well paid? Also I'm curious about the academic year - so most uni teachers have a couple months off per year? Do they hire non-Aussies?

How would you suggest I go about learning more?

Thanks again for your patience!

They hire all native English speakers. The pay is around two grand a month, which is as good as it can get I think without working at an international school. No long paid vacations though as they operate on a trimester schedule, but lots of down time in between semesters. Check out: www.rmit.edu.vn

I believe that RMIT is opening a campus in Hanoi, and they may have openings now, up there.

I was offered a job at a Vietnamese university, but the pay was about half that of a private language school, and the classes were huge -- fifty students or so, although I was told that about half would drop out by the end of term. How's that for encouragement?

I think that there are other jobs limited to those with an MA that may pay a bit more, but I don't have any information on that.
