Hello again,

So, I am soon to be grinning massivly in the land of smiles, and I was wanting to capture some of this grinning activity on camera.

I am needing to buy a new camera, and am thinking about going for a digital one.

Those of you who are already in Thailand, do you think it would be better/cheaper for my to by a camera at home (UK), duty free or in Thailand?

Cheers

Marmalade

Good digital cameras are slightly cheaper in the USA and I would feel more comfortable buying one there anyway as the software will certainly be in English and the other componenet parts are more likely to be the genuine article instead of a Chinese copy (such as the memory).

My gut tells me that the situation is the same with UK/Thai camera prices -- but maybe there's some kind of weird tarrif that makes it not so.

If you don't know what you want, I'd reccomend you buy the smallest camera that seems to be fully functional (with a optical zoom and at least 2 megapixels -- should be no trouble these days). I have a Cannon Digital Elph that fits in the cellphone pouch on my backpack -- very very convenient for trekking or shooting photos while riding pilon on a motorcycle taxi. Japanese people prefer Sony cameras, which probably means they're the best as far as technology goes.

If you can't put it in your front pocket, don't buy it. You'll also want at least 128MB of memory (I have 256) and a spare battery.

I shopped for a camera in Bejing and Shanhai and found the prices
at the "malls" for such items were comparative to what I paid for
it in the US. Just like in the US Im sure there were deals to be had
in places I had not looked or known about...
