I went to a night market in Feng Chia.

There were many vendors of food.

There were a few vendors of consumer durables such as clothing, mostly operating from storefronts.

I suspect the Feng Chia night market is more food-centric than others. I suspect that other night markets might be more suited to durable goods.

I'm in Taichung, but I don't know which night markets are best for which goods.

I also don't know if various night markets have more diverse vendors on some nights than others.

I suspect many night markets do most business during particular hours of the night, and if one goes too early or too late one won't find what one wants.

I am also considering going down to "Electric Street" downtown on a Friday or Saturday night to see if it is more lively at night than during the day.

I am a really boring person, because while I was browsing the various offerings, it struck me that taking a date to a night market would be more fun than taking her to a bar. I would want to take her to somewhere with more diversity than Feng Chia, however.

I am posting this in the hope that people who know Taichung will enlighten me (hint, hint, MTurton) but of course any information regarding anywhere in Taiwan will be noted. If nothing else, I can tell my expat friends who frequently go to other cities on the weekends.

Thanks in advance for the information.

Edit:
According to taiwanfun.com:
Where the markets are
(head out anytime after 8:00):

Tunghai Night Market - Every Tuesday; Drive north on Tunghai Rd. past the university until you come to a white walking bridge. The night market is just after the bridge on the right-hand side. Kuochi Street
Fengchia Night Market - Every night; Located to the right of Fengchia Universitys main gate; Wenhwa Rd.
Chunghwa Night Market - Every Night; The market starts at the intersection of San Min Rd. and runs arounds along Chunghwa Rd. all the way to Chung Cheng Rd.
Hsitun Night Market - Monday Night; near the end of Chinhai Rd.
Chunghsiao Night Market - Every night; Behind the Taichung train station on the other side of the tracks, between Fuhsing Rd. and Chiencheng Rd.

I don't know, I went looking around the San Min area for the Chunghua night market. There were a few folks selling food in the vicinity around 8 p.m. Possibly the real market doesn't start until midnight, because I didn't see any other vendors. Probably the street that I thought was KungYuan wasn't really Kungyuan. Perhaps I am navigationally challenged, severely myopic, and lacking in clue.

Hmm...I don't really know Taichung, only lived here a couple of years and I don't spend time in the city. But there is a great clothing/junk market off of Shuangshih road, right where that bridge -- I think it is Fuhsing Rd that runs behind the train station-- goes over the train tracks and then makes a funky turn before coming down to earth again. Here are some pics from my site:

Hope that whets the appetite!

Come to think o it, there's another night market on the corner of ChinHwa and Hsueh Shih, up the road from the China Medical College Hospital. Never been there, though. Some of the larger morning markets also have clothes, like the Shuinan morning market.

But night markets are mostly for food and entertainment. The morning and evening markets are the places for cheap clothing. We usually buy whatever is on sale at the large volume retailers, though. I never shop in the markets for clothing.

Thanks for the hints.

Night market runs are largely due to appetite for exploration as much as appetite for shopping.

By the way, the Feng Chia market does have plenty of consumer durables -- but I was about three blocks away from all of them.

The *correct* way is to go up to the front gate of the university and take a hard right just before you enter the gate. Much of the action of the night market is along that alley and in nearby areas.
