|
|
so we have had the top movies/music/dramas/comedies, well how about top 5 sports stars
since i have started this thread i might as well give you my vast opinion (all ill informed!!!) about the most prominent sports and sports stars of our times
Aussie Rules:now i know next to nothing about this game, but hell it looks like a real mans game, no fcuking around. As i am from ireland i have to say it looks a little familar to our own game of irish football, but it is much tougher, and more exciting, irish football is a hybrid game of basketball, football, and rugby, and is generally sh ite, but i would probably be lynched if i said that back home, fu cking bogball!!!!
Ping Pong: another game i know nothing about, but the Chinese are bloody good at it, i have seen a lot of my students play it, and it is a fun game, but can be over very fast
tennis: now i dont know what the point of men playing tennis is, it looks a bit gay to me, and then you have all those spoilt brats like Andre agassi (cant even pronouce his own fucking name, andrex!) and mc enroe, come on for crying out loud its only tennis no need to blow your rag over it
on the other hand, ladies tennis makes much more sense to me! a bit like beach volleyball
can anyone remember Gabriella Sabatini from argentina, mary pierce, and anna k, God they are good at mmm tennis, and they look nice too,
thank god martina navararolita (or however you spell her name) retired, she put me off my supper!
baseball; havent a clue, havent played rounders in such a long time
basketball: a fast game, that is not bad, not great either!! but loved in China, and they are pretty good at it here, my fav player was Charles Barclay, he had a personality and was always a laugh, not like jordan...yes he is, i guess the best (from what i hear and see) but man isnt he so boring and dull
boxing:my second fav sport, even if im not much good at boxing myself
the best has to be Ali, but joe louis, tyson, roy jones jr, duran, fraiser, robinson, and a shit load of those crazy mexicans and cubans that all have names like fernandez and martinez, they are all great
cricket: any sport where pakistan, india, sri lanka and the west indies are world beaters is doomed
cycling: it is very hard to know what to think about Armstrong, is he on drugs or not, i cant really be sure he isnt, i mean drugs have dominated this sport, his trainer is a very well known pusher, and it is hard to come back from cancer, i remain doubtful
lemond was good, indurian was good, but who was clean
darts: a game that is very exciting to watch, on TV, really it is! 2 super heavyweights downing pints of lager, smoking like chimneys, and occasionally playing some darts as well, prime TV
a game im sure i can play if i practise enough! taylor, lowe, but i liked bristow and, bobby geroge and his candlesticks
equestrian and show jumping: what a load of complete tosh, not even good for gambling!
horse and dog racing: now this is more like it, the sport of Kings, and a sport that im sure ireland is unbeatable at......great horses and top jockeys....Istrabraq, arkle, red rum, shergar and vintage crop to name but a few, then we have all our champion jockeys from eddery, kinane, fallon, murtagh, and the great tony mccoy
cigar was a great american horse too, pity it fired blanks in the stud farm
and imagine they eat pure bread horse in france, bloody frogs!!!!!
hurling: irish sport, picture the scene, about 30 sweaty irish guys with sticks in their hands, trying to hit a rock over a post, the fastest ball game in the world, field hockey it aint, when played well is the best game in the world bar none
formula oneracing: boring, boring, will somebody please stop this trash, round and round we go, and again for another 70 odd times
those TV controllers are all totally wrong, the only reason people watch it on sunday mornings is that they are just waiting for their sunday lunch and there isnt anything else on the box unless you want to watch mass or some early morning political garbage, stop it and return to our screens italian football, or at least the dukes of hazzard
i guess schumacher would ge the best of all time at this
rally racing: much better, colin mcrae is the best, if only because his PS2 game is streets ahead of all the other rally games, i hate the official WRC one, drives me spare
athletics and all that stuff: yes great excitement, sure i could do that too if i was full of steroids
i liked seb coe, and steve cram, and de napoli from italy (a long distance runner), sergi bubka was always good to watch too, everytime he broke a world record he got a lot of money, a millimetre here another millimetre there, good to watch though
snooker: higgens, white, o sulliven...they are the men of world snooker, the rest are just trying catchup, hendry and davis should be shot, also tony drago, mark stevens and ken doherty are good
i count higgens as a genious
rugby: league, well i only know martin offiah, and he looked strong
union, keith wood has to be the best!
motorbike racing: road racing has to be joey dunlop, how many times did he win the isle of man TT,
the Olympics: steve redgrave must get a mention, what a star, and what a gentleman, 5 olympics and 5 golds, thats pretty good stuff
you know i can never understand a lot of those sports
why the hell isnt rugby, golf, darts, snooker, and horseracing in it!!! ireland would definitely win a few medals then, and not one or two like we usually do
then again if lepping, beer drinking, bar brawling, bog jumping, and talking through our arse were sports we would come tops too (though the Chinese might give us some competition in the last one)
i have left the best sport till last.....Football: diego maradona, is the best, no debate, no doubt, the man is a fcuking legend, the goal against the english where he graciously went past the whole english team was a pure delight, and the hand of god wasnt bad either
best defenders were paul mcgrath and franco baresi,
mcgrath was black and irish, so of course you never hear his name mentioned now, how could a black irish guy be a good defender!! much better than over rated robson
and maldini has been so poor in the last 5 years or so, its a joke
best mids, i like zidane for his trickery and grace on the ball, and keane for the exact opposite, ie the man and the ball, both will do, either is optionale
stks: i liked romario and battigoal, but King henrik is the best
and maradona is God
best manager is Clough, with alex ferguson as his teaboy
so after all that my total top 5 Sportsmen are......
1: Ali -- boxing
2: Maradona -- football and cocaine, and food, lots of it too
3: Higgens -- snooker and drinking
4: Mcgrath -- football and drinking
5: White -- snooker and drinking
I am truely sorry about the irish and britsh bias in this thread, so i will be very interested to hear about North American views on this topic

hey this is a good topic, better than politics for a change. i think soccer must be the number one sport in the world these days--though not in the usa and not in canada.
in my home town (west coast, usa) rugby was the biggest sport at the turn of the century (1900) because it was a coal mining town and the people there were immigrants from all over the uk. now that sport is dead.
i used to watch baseball in the 1970's. great end of an era. pete rose, reggie jackson,et al. any red sox fans out there?
formula one can be interesting. any frisbee players teach esl? i do. |

Here's six, but it I put an extra in case golfers aren't considered athletes:
Wayne Gretzky
Patrick Roy
Tiger Woods (though I hesitate to put a golfer on any "athlete" list, he is simply amazing when he's on)
Roberto Clemente
Mike Tyson (before the Buster Douglas fight and subsequent jail stints)
Walter Payton |

Barry Bonds (controversial and not well-liked, but still the greatest baseball player of all time)
Walter Johnson (who wouldn't love a player with the nickname Night-train)
Bob Gibson (so good they had to change the rules of baseball)
Ty Cobb (a mean son-of-a-biscuit)
Ted Williams (the Splendid Splinter) |

Basketball- Magic Johnson
Hockey- Mario Lemeiux
Baseball- Babe Ruth
Soccer/Football- Pele
American Football- Jim Brown
The Barry Bonds vs. the Babe debate is a good one but all one needs to see is that the Babe in addtion to his redefining the game and holding the records for homeruns for so long also had two 20 win seasons as a pitcher and 17 career shutouts, more than Pedro Martinez! |
