my canadian passport expires next year. i have applied for a working visa and am just waiting for immigration to give me the results. how long will it take to have the WHV changed to WV if they say yes.

and since my passport expires next year, do i have to go back to canada to renew it or can i get it renewed here at the canadian embassy or anything like that??

My passport also expires next year. Contrary to you I am now in the process of extending my WV for the third time. Your situation is also a very standard one and I would expect that it should take the usual time of about 4-6 weeks to be processed.
About your passport...you do not have to return to Canada to renew. You can either contact the embassy in Tokyo or the consulate in Osaka. They will send you an application kit with very easy to follow instructions on how to fill out the forms. You can also download the forms from their website www.ppt.gc.ca

I think if you are renewing AND you have all the papers in order you should hear back from them inside of two weeks. They send a post card saying that you should drop into the nearest Immigration bureau with the renewal fee. Of course, if you have forgotten some papers then it will take longer. but only as long as it takes for you to submit them.

Spidey is right. You can get your passport renewed in Tokyo or Osaka. If you are in a hurry, you can call the Embassy and they will send the forms or print off the internet. I would call to make sure you have everything before you go. Forget if you can do it by mail, but probably in person is faster. They expedited mine in Osaka because of family sickness. They were very efficient and curteous.
