Hello all,
My girlfriend and I, both Canadian, are coming to Taiwan in two weeks. We have been in touch with several people through the internet, and one person recently wrote to us from Taichung saying that the teaching market in Taichung is 'slim'. We have not yet determined our destination but had provisionally foreseen Taichung as a good option. We have the degrees and the TESLs, visas and experience (we are currently living and teaching in France), so our rsums ought to be competitive.
I would appreciate any feeback you may have, and apologise should this be addressed in another thread.

Also, for those of you on the ground, are things (other than coffee!) that I should be certain to bring with me so I won't be deprived of them in Taiwan?
Thank you in advance for your feedback. This forum provides an enormous resource to those of us on our way for the first time.

You're arriving pretty near to the end of the year, so jobs won't be as plentiful. But, still, you'll get work very easily. There are tons of jobs here. It's good you haven't committed to a location yet. You'll have the chance to scope out places and find a job and a location that suits you.

Don't worry about bringing coffee; Taiwan has tons of the stuff. Coffee shops are everywhere. I can't think of too many things you'll need to bring. Maybe clothes if you are above average in size. Clothing tends to be a little smallish here. There are foreign hypermart chains operating here selling imported stuff. This is a pretty rich place and the people have a taste for western goods. You shouldn't feel deprived.

There are lots of jobs in Taichung.

For what to bring, see my page at

Foodwise everything is available and coffee is rapidly becoming a way of life in Taiwan. I can think of a couple of specialty coffee shops here in Taichung. There's an American supermarket here that sells coffees, and lots of local ones that sell not-so-good coffee.
