Folks:
This is Ghost, from Montreal, Canada. B.Ed., Certified Teacher (Ontario College of Teachers), T.E.S.L., M.A.
Next week will interview for a position at the Canadian International School. The interview will be in Ottawa.
The salary range goes from S$43,000 to S$54,000 depending on experience. This works out to S$3583 to S$4500 per month, with Ghost probably on the lower end, due to not many years experience as a Certified teacher.
There is also an allowance of S$700.00/month for 10 months, to offset the cost of rental accommodation, Sep. to June.
Teachers usually share apartment style accommodation commonly with 2 or 3 sharing.
The teacher info. document states that "teachers can live in a nice condo and enjoy a comfortable life style and still travel extensively as well as save up to 20 to 30% annually."
Any information or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. |

hi,
thats a decent wage here for teaching, although many expats are on more in other professions. There again many are on less! The housing allowance will all get used up though, as a condo will cost 600 minimum if sharing with 2 others in a 3 bed place.
It wont, in all honesty, be easy to save anything, depending on your lifestyle and other commitments.
All in all though the wage is good as most are offering hourly rates of 20-60 or wages of 2500 as that is the minimum to get a pass, or was. There is a new pass now which allows employers to get foreign professionals and pay them from 1800. And believe me they will try and do that.
Good luck with whatever you decide. |

Ghost was not selected for the position at the Canadian International school. They are looking for people who have several years teaching experience, in the same place, which was not the case with peripatetic ghost.
Would it be possible to just come to Singapore and look for a job on site? And what are the rents like?
Malaysia is just up the road, and there is a city there which is next to Singapore - maybe possible to lodge in Malaysia and job hunt in Singapore?
Is there a big difference in cost of living between Singapore and Malaysia?
Thanks for any pointers. |

Of course it's possible, one of my friend's friend did just that and he managed to get one, a non-teaching job. Rents can cost anywhere between S$300+ to a few thousand dollars, depending on your requirements.

Sure you can do that, but I think it can be quite a hassle traveling to & fro via the causeway. Besides, the cost of living between Johor Bahru and S'pore isn't that great compared to the rest of the M'sian cities. But of course it's still cheaper to live in Johor Bahru.
Good luck |
