What is the pay scale for English teachers in Singapore? Is English teaching a good occupation there? What could be expected in relation to pay, flats, holidays, weekly hour caps?

Cheers.

It seems as though places are paying between 2500-3000 per month (SG dollars). I don't know whether this turns out to be a good salary or not. Confused I'm thinking about going too, and can't decide whether it's a good idea... Can anyone help out with this?

As far as I am aware the salary here tends to be around 2-2500. It is not too easy to live on unless you share an apartment. If you want a condo with facilities this will cost s$600 minimum if sharing with 2 others in a 3 bedder.

If you eat local food at coffe shops it will be around 2.50-4 depending on appetite and whether you eat at HDB areas or in the city. The food is great though. Restaurants etc will kill you on this wage on a regular basis. Beer at a western pub costs 12-18 dollars a pint! Even local coffee shop beer is around 5.30-6.50.

Transport is cheap and taxis ok too but it all depends on how often you have to use them. Its a local wage but locals have all the other benefits to support them so its not easy. But if you can do it its a great place!!!

Good luck.

Hi Geordie.
I' uk born and bred and live in England. I'm hoping to go to SG to teach next year for 6 months.
I've no experience teaching English and dont have a degree, only an online TEFL certtificate.
I've over 25 years freelance writing experience though plus 11 years broadcasting on radio for the BBC. I'm hoping this experience will outweigh the lack of a degree!
My wifes chinese and hopefully she could find work there also but its not desperate ! I'm looking for a semi retired situation really in the sun.
Any info or contacts you could give would be much appreciated.
Dave T.
