Can anybody tell me anything about Fukui city? I'm on my way there to teach soon. I've scoured the internet so I've found pretty much all the websites already. I was just wondering if anyone could offer something more than the words 'rural' or 'cold'?!!! The pictures look amazing but there's nothing in guidebooks.

Thanks

Fukui itself is a bit boring and dirty. However, depending on whether you go east or west, you're less than an hour drive away from some of the most spectacular coastlines AND mountains in Japan. (Some of these places you can reach by local train as well.) Great biking too--15 minutes gets you out of the city, and then you're off exploring.

Again, while there is some nightlife in Fukui, I found the best thing about the city to be the ease in which it is left behind.

PM me if you want more info.

Bad points of Fukui:

Terrible weather. And I mean terrible. It rains or snows, and this by no means scientific, an estimated 96.3% of the time there.

Little nightlife. A good jazz bar by the station, though.

"It's the ugliest city I've ever seen."--several people

Good points:

Good for movie buffs. Fukui has the largest number of movie screens per capita in Japan. Also, it has a great art house cinema in town.

Great ALT community. You can make friends there pretty easily.

Great International Center for a city that size.

Good beaches in summer, an hour or so away. Good skiing in winter, an hour or so away.

I lived there for a while, so you can PM too if you want more info.

I lived in Fukui for a short time too.The worst thing about living there is the weather. It is a very dark cloudy part of Japan and rains a lot.Sometimes there is a lot of snow too.
If you are the outdoor type there are some great mountains nearby and the Sea of Japan offers some excellent scenery.
The seafood in the area is great but the crabs were quite expensive.
I didn't really like Fukui and was glad to leave.
You may like it there.Hard to say.
Anyway,good luck.

But you must admit, the other 3.7% of the time, the weather is quite nice. Smile

Thanks for all your comments! I come from the greyest place in the world anyway, so I'm not too worried. And anywhere near the sea and the mountains can't be too bad!
