They charge the school not you. If they are charging you then its a scam. The general view on this board is DO NOT USE RECRUITERS. This is not because they are evil, they are just unknown quantities. You just don't know what you are getting.
Come over and look for a job or sign up with a chain school like Hess (don't know the web address) or www.kojenenglish.com
You can search both these schools on this forum, there is an abundance of info available. Also check the Job Information section on this site and also go to www.forumosa.com and take a look there. |

Instead of charging you money, recruiters take about a quarter of your paycheck each month. So while the cost to the school each month is about $70,000 you will only see $50-55,000. Also recruiters earn $20-30,000 for supplying the school with a teacher. So after a year's employment they pocket off your labour up to $270,000. That's about US$7,000 out of your pocket.
For this they pretend to do a number of services for you:
 Airport pickup- $150 value.
Help finding accomodation. A school would otherwise do this, anyway, a private room in a hostel in Taipei is still good value per month.
Help getting an ARC. Again the school would help you with this.
 having your documents held hostage.
getting to sign an ambiguous contract with lots of little problems. Don't worry. They won't honer this anyway.
getting to pay an illegal. Don't worry. You won't get this back even if you do stay the length of the contract.
Having to wait an extra two weeks to collect your pay.
if they do supply you an apartment it will be a flea-ridden, rat-infested cesspit with no running water or mattresses or airconditioners.
frustration. lies. 'errors' in your bank balance. etc. |

Are you sure about that? I think there is a payment to the recruiter for delivery of an appropriate teacher, but what kind of laoban would continue to pay a recruiter for another 12 months. You quote NT$270,000 as the cost to the school. Who in their right mind would pay that. I would imagine the school could put several half page ads in the English speaking newspapers for less than this.
Given an average Taiwanese salary of lets say NT$30,000 a month, that would mean a recruiter would only have to supply two teachers to schools per year to make themselves considerably better off than the national average. It seems unlikely, otherwise everyone would be doing it!
NT$20 to 30,000 for supplying a teaching might be right, but the rest I'm not so sure about. |

Recruiters can be broken into two types in terms of fee schedules: the type that charges the employer only and the type that charges the client (and probably the employer as well). I think the former type is more common. One needn't really concern themselves with fees for this "service." But your case may be a bit different. I recall you said you were of Chinese ancestry. My girlfriend and I had dealings with recruiters before we came here (and were thus lied to, creating difficulty for us. But we found far better jobs on our own). We were told that, although schools may hire my girlfiriend, they wouldn't pay for a Chinese-- only white teachers would net a fee. So perhaps in your case a recruiter might charge you for the "service".
Of course, it has already been said many times on this forum that recruiters are a bad risk. I don't recommend them. |

Yeah, some WILL charge a percentage. I knew one recruiter lady who wanted to take off 25% out of my first two paychecks. Don't stand for it.
Talk to your boss, or employer, and talk things out. The recruiters usually find you the worst of jobs anyway, so don't trust them.
THos charging the schools-well, it's their problem. May put you in a bind so hold on fast. THese recruiters in Taiwan are real scammers too, so find a job on your own if you can. A recruiter is just plain old bad news, unless they work fo rthe school itself.
Kojen is now hiring teachers from abroad. I found hey're the best but have heard some stories from workers there. It's up and down, and yoy're caught in the middle. Everything costs here, much unlik Korea, where they just stick you in there and don't expect much but your workload done well.
Come here and look on TEalit or in the paper. You can bypass recruiters. Tell them you won't pay anything either. MOst just want quick money and make you their target. |

If you can avoid using a recruiter by all means avoid using a recruiter or job placement agent.
9 out of 10 people end up broke and unknowingly working illegally.
