It's a bit trying to be North American and committed to teaching in Italy. I have received some better, albeit tentative, offers from language schools in Genoa, but I have to warn anyone against working in Sardinia for one director in particular. The director's name is Adriana Bertarelli, an Australian who owns schools in Olbia and Tempio. I met her in Rome, where she interviewed me and offered definite hours and (nonfinancial) relocation aid if I would arrange to travel to her school in Olbia. So I arranged to take the long overnight ferry from a town just north of Rome, booked a hotel in Olbia (only one open hostel on the whole island in low season), and discovered that the number of hours and any aid in relocation had miraculously disappeared. That's alright, nothing can stop an English teacher intent on teaching, so I began to teach anyway. Well, that long glutinous mass of cumulative help, promised hours, or, as a matter of fact, any kind of pay whatsoever never did materialize. All told, I wasted upwards of 200 euro waiting for this loser to deliver on commitments. Sardinia is beautiful, Genoa has teaching opportunities, but if you're looking in Italy, you'll want to avoid Ms. Bertarelli. |
