Does anyone know how I can find a school without going thru a placement agency? |

Look at the That's Beijing/Guangzhou/Shanghai magazine website
http://www.thatsmagazines.com/classifieds
There are a lot of EFL websites that have positions open (see the website thread in this forum).
If you're already in China, it's as easy as legwork. Visit some schools and inquire directly.
A recruiter should always be your last option.
Good luck. |

Actually, you can hardly avoid them. Those adverts in the THAT'S mags are almost always run by recruiters. Who are recruiters? They normally are Chinese English teachers that have some FAO experience.
NExt thing they do is offer foreigners up to their employers or to other schools.
Even so-called "training centres" often double as agents; this is, for ance, the fact when you work for company X that loans you to school Y. Public middle schools can't hire you legally, so they go through a middle-man.
You can also visit teflchina.com - and be snared exactly the same way. Watch out for Alin Buur! |

It helps to have an idea where you want to locate. Once you get an area in mind, look through the ads right here on Dave's. Even old ads can give you quite a lot of info like salaries and addresses and school names. Pick a few that sound good and email some applications. I agree that you are much better off dealing directly with the schools.

Why not ask them if they are an agent or not.
Most of the time it's too difficult to determine if their a school or not, even when they mention the name! |

You can also look at www.chinajob.com . This company has been set up by the State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs. So I would assume that they would do things by the book.
Can guarantee that they are not agents but should be a lot better than other sources. |
