SARS epidemic be darned! In my old 15 story building they are still at it. Behind my place they are still at it. Yep, at it with their tools of choice, the hammer and drill. If a small hammer doesn't fix it, get a bigger one. If the hammer fails, drill it, or bring in the jack hammer. It never stops. How do they find new surfaces to work on?

The new leaders might consider updating the flag. A hammer and electric drill seem appropriate. Idea

There already is a new one- the red 100-yuan note.
I refer to hundred-kuai notes as "hong qi" and it never fails to evoke a smile.

"Red" 100 yuan note? Looks more like a sickly Pepto-Bismol pink to me!
Razz

On this non-SARS related subject, I really do hate the new money! What's up this Mao on 5, Mao on 10, Mao on 20, Mao on 50, Mao on 100?!! I'm sick of looking at that dude's mug...I see enough of it already, here in Hunan! The money is almost as ugly as American money! It's too bad...the money before was way cooler...especially the 10 and 50 notes. I'm actually holding on to an old style 10 and 50 notes. When I get home, I plan to get those Socialist Realism Worker designs silkscreened on a T-Shirt. Now how cool would that be?? Wink

Sufferin' from a Great Helsman overdose,
Roberto!

How about a new national anthem while we're at it?

Instead of Chi Lai, Chi Lai, Chi Lai (stand up, stand up, stand up) how about 'Shenma, shenma, shenma? (what? what? what?)

Or... "Who's the leader of the gang that's made for you and me? (Mickey Mouse).

I want to introduce a new school song: "It's time to meet the muppets".

Maybe we live in the same building. Late Sunday at the moment and the noise (construction) outside is deafening. Ridiculous. Maybe for a new flag they can put a big panda carrying an even bigger sledgehammer.

Hey guys,I feel for you. Fairly quiet here at night...after about 12 a.m. I have a suggestion on what to do to shut up the noise. Just do what one of the locals did to me and some friends the other night when playing guitars after 10:30. Toss out a bucket of water on their heads. Guaranteed to send a message. Of course they didn't bother the locals at the next table who were doing the boisterous finger flashing game where looser chugs the jiu. Yi,Er,San... Cool

For me, the noise pollution begins at 6:30am. Every morning, an enormous, Cultural Revolution era loudspeaker, about 30 yards from my door, blares out the national anthem, followed by cheeseball pop songs (Celine Dion is a frequent selection). This lovely medley of songs goes on for an hour. I've given up on "sleeping in" past 7am. Anybody know where I can buy earplugs in Hunan? One of these nights I'm gonna sneak over there and do some Great Escape style wire-snippin'...

Maaan, you have it easy. There are speakers about 10 yards from each FE apartment here.

How does anyone do any exercise when the exercise section of the broadcast lasts for 40 seconds ?

In my part of Hunan the noise starts at 6:00. No Celine Dion for us, though. We get loud, loud opera. Lately they've been playing a saxophone rendition of Auld Lang Syne between classes, too. Whenever I walk by those speakers I think about all the things I could do with an axe.... Haven't found earplugs in Hunan, brought mine from the States. I sure could use a new pair Sad

Why do they do this?

We get the music at 6:00 a.m. every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, at least for the short time I have been here.

Then again at 10:00 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday.

Is this what modernization means: Formerly Chinese water torture now Chinese music torture?

Okay, I don't want to encourage Canucklehead to contiue posting, but his obsession with burning bodies...maybe true?

Zhengzhou, Henan, 3 night ago...the school owns the set of building where I live, so there is a back courtyard the workers use. 3 nights ago, at 12:30, they start burning thiongs...I don't know what. 2:00-4:30, fire trucks coming in and out, Then that night , and the next two nights, two huge bulldozers, 100 tons of dirt, working all night back there Shocked Shocked Shocked I don't want to know. DOn't tell me what they might be doing...don't want to know.

Good old Henan...I guess the local rowdies have now attacked two hospitals designed to quarantine possible SARS patients. Bu hao yisi. Wonder if this means we will have a new leader in henan. Lots of them seem to be using this to get more clout, get rid of rivals:roll:
