If so, how does being a dependant compare to being an alien foreigner in terms employment and applying for courses, etc.?

I mean is life easier/more difficult being a dependant in hk?
My friend is to marry a HK citizen and asked her boss for time off work to attend the function and the boss issued a notice of dissmissal.
