Hi! I'm just moving to Bangalore, and was wondering if anyone there can recommend a church that is Christian and evangelical? Thanks!

Hi Drew,

I've been to India twice but, unfortunately, have never been to Bangalore. Anyway, the major Protestant chuches in India are the Churches of North India and South India - they are amalgamations of the Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregationalist denominations. In the major cities, both chuches will probably provide at least one Sunday service in English. ( Incidently, the Church of South India is quite interesting - although it has an episcopal form of church government , about 30 years ago they had as a bishop, one Leslie Newbiggin, a Scottish Presbyterian ! Newbiggin was the author of that insightful book, 'Honest Religion for Secular Man' - but I'm digressing - sorry ! ). Also, you might be interested in attending some of the Mar Thoma churches, for an appreciation of indigenous liturgical expressions.

I've come across some news items about the growth of pentecostalism in India. However, I'm not sure whether such churches are expressions of a genuinely indigenous form of pentecostalism - or merely copies of a particular form of American-style (white) pentecostalism, with its blend of fundamentalism, 'prosperity gospel', and far right politics. I'd be interested in learning of your experiences - and insights gained - with respect to the churches you become involved with.

Incidently, will you be working in Bangalore ? If so, how did you find your job ? It appears that many of the people who post to Dave's are also interested in working in India.

I hope that your sojourn in India turns out to be both a happy and fruitful time for you.

Regards,

Peter

Hi Drew,

I think you might try out the Full Gospel Church in Bangalore pastored by one Paul Thangiah which is rumoured to the largest church in the city. It is a part of the Assemblies of God denomination( www.assemblies.org) based in Sprinfield Missouri.USA. There are church services in English and it has a substantial expatriate membership, most from from Singapore I hear.

Well, I've never been to B'lore myself but heard about FGAGC when I lived in Singapore in the mid 90s. BTW you must be working for Spectra I guess as they approached me for a phone interview and the money seemed good. Well, I am happy in the Caucasus for the moment but might bump into you in India in the next few years if you are still around.

Hope that lead will be of use. Do take care.

Sorry Drew

the previous link is not the best..this is the official wesbsite of AOG in USA

http://www.ag.org/top/

Also if you find your own denominational website and check for country links then you might find a local church compatible with your beliefs and traditions.

Also you might want to watch a church service online in the USA, UK, Singapore, Hongkong or Australia...write to me and I will give you a link for the region you prefer. for eg

www.emic.org
www.coos.org.sg
www.fcbc.org.sg

be blessed in all you do.. Agape

Hey there!

I found a great church and have been getting involved. It is called the Indiraganar Methodist Church at the corner of 100 Foot Rd and 13th Main.

This is an English-speaking church with some of the nicest people - they really reached out to me.

If anyone comes to Bangalore, you may want to check this out!
