I have read the banter in previous posts re surabaya.
Whats the cost of apartments and consumer goods, compared to jakarta.
not interested in the "hookers and american pie-type good times" stories from bean head dudes.
just reality.
kinda sick of Jakarta. |

Chester;
This place is starting 2 wear on me as well. It seems that all prices for just about everything have increased since March......yet the salary is the same. Talk about runaway inflation + the nuts at MUI.......+ several other things.........
TP lived in Surburbia for a few years....maybe he can fill us in...on what is like there. |

Surabaya is a dirty sprawling city with a relatively small city centre. It has several shopping malls and the super TP mall (not the TEAM PAPUA MALL) ... it has a thriving red light area called 'dolly': great place to go for cheap beers & just to hang out. The is a port close by & you can take a short ferry trip to Madura island (great if you have a bike).
SBY is also close enought to BROMO if you have a bike & a weekend free. Cheap flights to bali & Lombok etc.
Lots of mega-rich annoying Chinese who love the Mall & when not in the Mall they like to drive around in the lowered BMWs (complete with flashing underside blue lights).
Discos in all major hotels, expensive beers & expensive girls.
City is close to the 'beach' - not really a beach but nice place to head to in the morning after a night out (again if you have a bike) watch the sunrise, drink some coconut juice etc.
SBY is ok. Dirty, crowded, hot & did I say dirty? But easy to get away from.
Sorry I can't help with prices as It's been 2 years since I was there.
Pros - easy to navigate & easy to get away from.
Cons - stupid Chinese empty heads & really bad music in clubs.

TP
you should be a travel journalist - for reality TV perhaps.
good stuff.
the concept of access to "away" places is appealing.
SBY is hotter than Jakarta huh?
maybe like bangkok, not so much the heat, but little wind.
i hope to get back into mountain biking if posible, and it may be a better location than jakarta. |
