do schools ever offer a job to teachers who have not yet obtained their certification, but are enrolled in a certification course (im taking the CELTA) and will be awarded a certificate before the desired job opening starts? |

There are schools that offer jobs to teachers who have no certification and have no intentions of ever getting one, so the answer to your question is most likely yes. |

This is how I see China anyway.
I started "teaching" here in August 2003 and I am still at the same School. My School is 2 hours northwest of Shanghai.
I do not have any Degrees or Certificates. I am 57 years old.
I think I would have a problem if I wished to teach in a more popular area or a big City - where there is more competition. Out here it is hard for them to get teachers so they happily accept just about anyone - which is why I got lucky.
I am too old to learn Chinese and I am too old to obtain a Certificate, however I am happy here and intend staying.
I do not earn as much money as most Foreign teachers do but that does not bother me because firstly, I do not deserve to as I do not have the education they do and secondly I only work 10 hours per week. Money is not my motivation - happiness is, and happiness is in abundance here in China. |

Ackerley,
I was in exactly that position when I got into this business. Degree in hand, but in the middle of taking a certification course. I interviewed and got the job before I finished my certificate. I finished the certificate before I started work. |

Having a degree is usually enough to get you an interview. The very fact that you are also obtaining a certificate shows your prospective employer that are serious about teaching. A definite plus for you.
Good luck
