Just that it's quite cold for about six months out of the year. Also, they tend to run searches for foreign faculty a LOT....

Judging from their website, you'll probably be teaching 共通講座 courses--i.e., lectures in general English skills--to classes of would-be engineers, electricians, scientists, etc.

The specific program's website there is down right now, so I can't tell you anything more. At many universities, though, these classes tend to be large and difficult to teach--e.g., 40-50 mostly male students in one class, many with little to no English ability.

I taught in Kitami last year, and it is a nice city. A bit remote, and it does get cold in the Winter, but the people are friendly and it has a comfortable atmosphere. I didn't know anybody who taught English at Kitami Institute of Technology, but I taught a few of the students and professors at the Eikawa where I worked. I never heard anything bad about the place from them.
I wouldn't worry too much about the cold. Apartments in Hokkaido have good heating systems (much better than in the Tokyo area!), and I was actually much warmer inside my home in Hokkaido in the winter than where I live now, in Chiba!
Kitami has a population of around 120,000, and there aren't a lot of foreigners there, but there are some good restaurants and bars. Also, the countryside is beautiful.
Best of luck.

Good points, Andy.

It probably should be added as well that, as a former national university, the salary is probably going to be extremely high. I'd imagine that you'd be able to save a lot of money over the five years of the initial contract....
