Was wondering when the school year starts in Colombia? And how hard is it to find a job there? Thanks.

I'm currently living and working at a biligual school in Santa Marta, Colombia so I have a few insights for you.

The school year here depends on the individual school/institute. Some follow the traditional Latin American system of a January-Nov calendar, and others follow the North American Sept.-June calendar. Typically I've noticed that the bilingual schools use the NA calendar and the institutes and public schools the LA calendar.

So, if you're looking to work at a school as opposed to a language institute, chances are slim to none at this point. However, it's not a bad idea to put in your resume to a few schools because you never know when a position might open up unexpectedly (people leaving, people getting fired, maternity leave etc etc). But in general terms, a language institute like Colombo Americano would be a good option right now. Here's the link to the one in Medellin. Surf the web for more cities around the country.

Just a note though, your pay and 'perks' are much better at a bilingual school. So if you're hoping to save money, it'll be tough to do so working at a language institute.

good luck.
