I have met the most wonderful man in Turkey whilst on holiday this year and been back twice since to see him, I am not a young naive woman and am enjoying the romance for what it is but things are becoming more serious between us. The only thing that worries me is that he has gone home for the winter and his house is divided into 3 flats, his parents have the upstairs flat and his sister and husband the downstairs flat and he lives on his own in the middle flat. I am worried that he may be married as surely it is very unusual for a single Turkish man to live in a separate flat from his parents or am I just being an old cynic? What do people think? I could ask him outright but if he is just stringing me along anyway he may lie and I have no way of knowing, I suppose the only way to find out is if he invites me to his home over the winter time. I'm interested to know if it is so unusual for someone single to live alone. |

I got married to a turkish man and have lived for four and half month. Well, it is common in Turkey that all of familes (for me, even relatives) live in a three or four floor building. BUT, it is not USUAL to see that he is living a separate floor rather than living with his mom and dad.
Well. unless there is something else going on (rich? not good relationship with his parents? or...?), as far as I know (I know just twenty turkish men and women) it is not common.
I used to live with his brother in the same house for more than two years just right after I got married, without any "proper" appreciation. Well, your case seems just "I am not sure."
So, ask him when you go back to his palce this winter. |

Thanks guys for your advice and taking the time to respond. Apologies Dervish for not being a ESL related topic and thanks for responding anyway! I know what I need to do but was curious to hear about the cultural norms before I bring subject up. |
