Got my newest visa invitation today and much to my surprise the location isn't listed where I have to get it. So I have a choice! I was originally planning to go back to America, but now I'm wondering about making good on my original dream of going to China. Even just for a visa run, I could at least say I made it there.

Any news on the Russian Embassy in Beijing? Or Ulan Bataar in Mongolia?

A little money saved up (knock on wood) a blank field for "embassy" on my invitation, and a handy blue passport.

Where to go? A week in Cypress? Egypt? Helsinki? Any place is cheaper than Seattle. Ah, a winter holiday in India perhaps?

I'm actually envious of you. I wish I could make some excuse to do some lone traveling to any country I wanted with a Russian Embassy.

Where would I go? Hmm, I guess I would go some place cheap that I haven't been to before. I would take a train, because I like the "choo-choo" sound. I would also get drunk in the over-priced mini-restaurant car. I would go to a place where they spoke Russian, or at least one of the languages I (you) speak not counting English.

I've never had a strong desire to travel to China, but if you've always wanted to then you should. I'm not sure what the appeal is though. I hear great things about the trans-Siberian route. It might be a little more expensive to go there than somewhere in Eastern Europe.

I think the your concern for now should be whether or not you need a visa for China, or wherever it is you end-up going. The obvious appeal of the baltics is that you don't need one for most of them.

When are you going?

Believe it or not, Milan is an excellent place for a visa. Same day service, lovey city and you can get reasonably priced flights there. Accommodation won't kill you either. Best all-rounder, as it goes. As Tallin is no longer a viable option, schools (and other companies) are having to review where they send their staff to renew their visas and I know my company are considering Milan! Woohoo!

Since when is Tallinn no longer viable? That was my tried and tested, place to stay with friends, fall back option.

Milan's an interesting idea.

I can go any time. I think there's a window of 3 months on the entry time for my invitation. Likely time will be winter break or when the students are doing exams. After new years plane fare will probably be cheaper?

Yes, visa for the country is an issue, though my old ME visa is still good, so I can show that I have the ability to leave the country (come back to Russia). I know this and a ticket is the main requirement for a lot of countries.
