Sorry, I was mistaken. As of May 1st 2003 one must now go in person to the Chinese Consulate to get the visa. That will stop alot of new prospective teachers who live in remote areas of the U.S. to go to China. To fly to Houston or New York just to get a visa for an already low paying job will probably be just too much trouble. The consulate justifies it as a 911 precaution. Also, the fees have been raised from 35 to 50$.It will just be too much trouble I am afraid.

I wonder if they are making it harder to get visas as a tit-for-tat against the US making it more difficult.
One could just fly into Hong Kong and get their visa there.
Of course, these days ANYBODY who's going to come to China (including Hong Kong) needs their head examined anyhow. |

Yes, one can fly into hong kong but then the price of going to H.K. increases your costs of working in China. If I were coming to China I would wait until after the summer for the new school year.

| Shouldn't increase the cost of getting to China by much -- especially if you're going to be working in southern China. |

True, you have a point, but I prefer Northern China, due to its Mandarin and I hate the heat of the South
But , you are right, one would be quite foolish to go to Southern China at this time.
I have never been below Shanghai. Maybe I should try but I think I'll wait a little longer. Beijing is like a ghost town.
Sanlitur is basically closed.
