Depends on the employer, of course. Many will want to know if you can adapt to a foreign culture, so expect some questions surrounding that issue.
Some will want to know how you would handle certain problematic situations, especially with very young kids.
Most will want to know why you want to be in Japan. |

Hi Nuchi,
I have encountered such questions as:
( 1 ) Why do you want to live/teach in Japan?
( 2 ) Why do you want to teach kids/adults in particular?
( 3 ) Have you been to Japan before? What do you know about Japan?
( 4 ) Various simple grammar tests
( 5 ) A quick reading test to establish the clarity and s-l-o-w-n-e-s-s of your speech
( 6 ) Have you done anything in your life that will contribute towards becoming a good teacher?
( 7 ) Can you adapt to a changing or difficult schedule?
( 8 ) Why you do want to work for <insert company name here> ?
( 9 ) What you do know about <insert company name here> ?
(10) You might be asked to do a short 'pretend' lesson. So just be happy and energetic whilst you do it.
Hope this helps |

To add to the list, I've been asked by a few schools about these odd, personal questions (which has nothing to do with teaching):
- do you have any siblings? if so, how many & what are their age & what do they do?
- what do your parents do? where were they born?
- where do your grandparents live?
- do you smoke?
- were you born in Canada?
- what are your hobbies?
- how much Japanese do you know? (if you know any)
- if you've been to Japan b4, when was the last time you visit & where & why?
- what is your method of teaching English to Japanese students?
- how long are you planning to stay in Japan?
- what was your major in University & what was the major about?
- (for one employer who lived in my city b4), why did I choose to go to this campus & not the one in downtown (my univ had 3 campuses)?
I don't know if this is normal in Japan for employers who ask these personal questions. What does the location of where my grandparents live has anything to do with my teaching abilities???
Perhaps I got asked these specific questions cuz I'm an Asian-Canadian.
Hope that helps a bit~ |

to add to the already established list:
when does your visa expire?
what would you do if there was a problem child in the class?
what would you do to get the students' attention if the class was getting out of control?
what would you do if students' skills in English varied? |
