There isn't much wrong with - permit me to correct your spelling: Dongguan (with two 'G"s). It is a mid-size, very new and fast growing built-up area that's not yet a proper city; just ten years ago it was but a conglomerate of villages and a lot of paddies. There is now one town called 'Dongguan" in a county of the same name, plus a cluster of townships such as Humen, Shilong, Changping etc. The latter are older settlements. New Dongguan is an imitation of Hong Kong, and it is relatively congenial and friendly; quite affluent too.
But it is devoid of scenic or historic value, and actually its feel is of a sterile place.

If employers pay higher salaries that's perhaps because their staff turnover is relatively high. Why? Few hire you legally. High pay attracts a certain type of TEFler, and incidentally, like meets like - the majority of employers are Taiwanese and other foreigners who get wooed by the local Party who in turn ignores a number of regulations. In other words: sleaze.
I quite like DOngguan and worked there for a whuile. My employer was a fine fellow, and housing was excellent.

It's true the pay IS better and if you have no accent that hinders your pronunciation of the English Language...you can easily get $12,000-$14,000 a month. However, housing is a bit more costly so that salary does not include your housing or much benefits like paid sick days or paid holidays...the cliche they use is "fend for yourself". I prefer this method, it gives them less control.
