'Winston' had some "interesting " posts here in the Job information Journal some time ago.

I read those, followed through his links, read the 'opus' that he had written and can assume that getting beaten up and robbed is exactly what he deserved.

I don't know the details of his case - in fact, your comments are the first that I have heard about it.

I'd love to know more.

It reminds me of the 'friendly american exchange student' 2 or 3 years ago who was arrested at a nightclub in possession of illegal substances. Big dipomatic huff-and-puff with Senators etc. coming to Russia to save this 'innocent young man'
His colleagues and fellow students that I met told me that he was an arrogant, ill-mannered sh*t who amused himself by regularly waking the neighbourhood in the early hours of most mornings with his loud music and drunken tantrums

I was thinking along the same lines as you,
if it was Winston then hurrah! but it was on the
other post about marrying Russian women and I
have scoured the net, but found nothing. apparentley
the victim was paraded with his battle scars on the
national news.

Well I dunno, there'll be more than one Asian-American wandering around Russia surely. Possibly Winston's posts have sparked a real invasion. I don't wish anything bad on him. I had the impression he was lonely and in his own way he went looking for affection. It seemed ok to him if it was bought and insincere. My impression was that he is quite a superficial kind of person. He never once wrote anything that showed he considered the FEELINGS of anyone at all he met in Russia. It was all : ME, ME, ME!!

As a woman, I felt a kind of solidarity with the Russian women he spoke about and I found it hard to listen to him discussing them like legs of lamb laid out in a butcher's shop. Just think how they'd all feel to see their photos up on the web and his accounts of his dealings with them.

He may have been Chinese, but he probably wasn't American. Normally, crimes against Americans I would know about as long as it was reported. If it made the news, I would without a doubt know about it.

There was one recent incident where four men, claiming to be electricians, knocked on a door after they had turned-off the occupant's power. The four men, saying they were going to fix the problem, were let in. They tied him up and robbed him of everything he had.

I saw the news item while sitting in the University cafe. I couldn't understand it, it was some students who drew my attention to it and told me that he was from America. I guess all I can really attest to was that he looked Chinese. Perhaps they were joking with me. They seemed serious and I had no reason to doubt them. Just a few days before I'd seen two news stories from my home state, so it seemed to fit in in a weird sort of way. Sorry if I passed on incorrect information. It should have occurred to me to ask Smurf.

Also, possibility it was Winston never occurred to me.

Smurf, what if it was a Chinese guy living in America, just a green card holder and not a citizen? Would you still have heard about it? Any way to check that?

Next time I go to work, I'll cut and paste the crime report. I think the duration is a month. It is possible that I'm wrong, but I'm relucant to email the individual that publishes the crime report as he is several paygrades higher than I am with a messages that starts-out with, "Some guys on the internet said..."

I'm still on my "honeymoon," so I might not get to it until next week.

I edited out a large portion of the following text of some specific crimes. I couldn't find anything specific about this previous mentioned guy, but this report only covers July - September.

"Turkey-drops"*

* The "turkey drop" is a scam, which is perpetrated by two or more individuals, who attempt to lure a pedestrian into a confrontation after catching his/her attention by dropping a conspicuous wad of currency on the ground. Typically one individual "accidentally" drops the money on the ground in front of the pedestrian, while the second either waits for the money to be picked up by the pedestrian, or picks up the money himself and offers to split it with the pedestrian. The individual who dropped the currency generally returns around that time, aggressively accusing both his cohort and the pedestrian of stealing the money This provokes a confrontation that may cause the pedestrian to remove their wallet to prove their innocence, generally resulting in the pedestrians money being stolen Westerners in Moscow are frequent targets of this scam.

I edited-out all instances of Turkey drops. There were four reported incidents.

**************************** left his apartment at approximately 12:45 pm and proceeded to a nearby bus stop, located directly across from the Ukraine Hotel As he boarded a bus a man approached him and presented his wallet showing some sort of badge He asked the American for his ticket The American showed him the ticket at which point, the man, in a belligerent tone, took the ticket from the American's hand and showed the man a device, where one must stamp the ticket The man demanded a 100 Ruble fine The man would not allow the American to leave the bus and had taken his ticket The American was now several stops past his destination, was unsure of his location, and decided to relent and pay the fine The man put the money in his personal wallet and then handed the ticket back with a blank receipt.

At 11:30 pm, four ************************** were walking by Lubyanka square, when two Russian adult males quickly walked into the middle of the sidewalk from a bus stop, approached the group and in a threatening manner and grabbed two ******************** by their jackets They asked for documentation, which the ***************** refused to provide until they identified themselves as officers One Russian male provided documentation, but it did not identify him as an officer After some heated arguments and light scuffling, the group freed themselves from the grasps of two men and proceeded to walk back to the Volga Hotel without further incident.

**************************** was walking near the Hotel Metropol when he noticed two women, one of whom had a backpack, ascending the stairs from the perehood Suddenly, a swarm of women and children rushed up behind her, trying to steal the backpack while holding up clothes to screen their activity ***************************** walked up behind and yelled at the thieves, who quickly ran away from the scene ************ noted that this appeared to be well orchestrated.

An American contractor was pick-pocketed in the Moscow subway He was robbed of his wallet and lost important documents to include his social security card, driver license, car registration, medical insurance card, credit cards, and approximately $1,000.00 in cash He immediately informed his office in Moscow and the hotel security.

A laptop computer was stolen from USG office space off compound After further investigation, it appeared that the perpetrators were opportunistic in accessing an unlocked door.

************************** was robbed at about 7 pm while leaving the "Prospect Vernadskogo" metro station area He was approached from behind and hit on the head with some type of metal stick Attackers took his wallet with his belongings including *************** The victim suffered a concussion and some broken ribs.

************* received a phone call on his cell phone The caller told ******** that he is working for Russkoye Radio (popular music FM - radio station) and that he had won a new cell phone To get the cell phone he was asked to buy a 50 dollar express-payment card and call back the radio station no later than in 30 minutes The caller provided the correct address of the Russkoye Radio office ************ was told that he had to be at the station the next day in order to receive the Russkoye Radio free gift (*It is a very typical fraud in Moscow You can find the detailed description in Russian here http://qwarta.ru/obman/mts_obman.htm)

Gypsy Cab Mugging: ********************************* hailed a Gypsy Cab on the evening of 09/03/2004 The ************ hailed the cab on Tverskaya and began to argue over price with the driver after entering the cab The ************ was than assaulted by an unseen second man who pulled the ******** from the car and forced him to the ground The ************ reported that his keys, wallet and ID had been taken from him.

A ****** employee was raped and murdered.

I edited out completely a few irrelevant things, like email scams. I've seen a paper copy of the October report, but can't find one on computer.

Everything reported is either regarding an American, or an American company/organization employee.
