Did anybody else get a Private Message from KeithB regarding opinions, in general, of various ESL forums? I doubt I am the only lucky one.
Irrespective of the views exposed in the Private Message, I am wondering if it is ok to spam via PM. I would hope that it isn't. |

Got it. Hate it.
I plan to send the *beep* hole an e-mail prominently featuring language that I can't use on Dave's. Then I plan to ignore him. Let him play with himself on his own private site. I'm stickin' with Dave.

I got it, too. Definitely poor form and overstepping the mark. Anyway at least there is the delete button! |

I didn't get the one from KeithB but I did finally have to use the "Block Address" on my Yahoo because one poster here was sending email with dirty language. |

I haven't read the entire thing yet but it is from the legendary kvido. Remember the posts on here about where is kvido ??? Anyway it is ESL related so I wouldn't call it spam. Not like he is trying to sell you a vacuum cleaner. |

Actually, it *is* spam.
Spam, by definition is either unsolicited commercial e-mail or unsolicited bulk e-mail.
1. It was certainly unsolicited, implicitly or explicitly;
2. It was certainly:
a. commercial (pushing his Web site); and / or
b. bulk (sent to many others); and
3. Private messaging is akin to e-mail.
Although not trying to sell vacuum cleaners, he was trying to sell his Web site.
I'm wondering why he just didn't post his comments on the forum instead of just PMing everybody individually. Any ideas? |

I saw the site when he first released it. At first he tried to make it as a parody, and had discussions about 'f***ing the students' and things of that nature. It was inspired by Simon Barne. Whoever that is.
He's cleaned it up a bit. |

It can't be spam, because it's impossible to send bulk mail by PM through Dave's. Completely impossible.
In order to send a PM to someone they have to look up your particular username, send a message, then look up another person to send another message. With thousands of users, it's highly doubtfull this guy sent a letter to each one. That means he had to use some sort of selection process.
SPAM is automated. It's impossible to send SPAM through PM's.
Now if this person just sent you a letter with information you don't like, well, that's definitely not SPAM. Just a letter you don't like.
At most unsolicited mail.
As for the website, I wasn't fortunate to get such a PM so I don't know which site you're talking about and so I can't judge for myself. |

Nope. It is quite possible. It simply involved harvesting usernames -- either manually or by script. It's not rocket science.
Then you only have to enter your message in the PM screen, send it to a username, hit return on the browser and paste a different username, hit send, hit return, paste another ... blah, blah, blah. Someone with semi-agile fingers can send at least 30 per hour.

If it's unsolicited & *either* bulk or commercial, then it is spam. |

No, I was the one that had to get cleaned up. In the process of trying to helpfully give someone what information I had on a city in response to a request, I jokingly used the phrase "kick them square in the nuts", which derives from 'South Park' and which even Dave's overanxious nervous-nellie censoring software doesn't screen out. God, I'm such a fiend. Anyway, I got a vicious attack out of nowhere for this. What a cunt. This attack came long after I had sent the "offending" phrase, and shortly after I had responded to the spammer. Hmmm. Hmmm.
Heard from the dread kvido, too. Apparently we're all "his opposition" and just too cowardly and feeble to verbally duel with him, or even hear him out. I know nothing of this guy's history here...perhaps there is a hint of an overblown (can I say "overblown" without morally outraging anyone? ) sense of his own self-importance running rampant here???
