In bad old Zhengzhou it seems they may be slightly understating SARS cases, just as they did with AIDS. Check out the Asia Times for two SARS - Henan articles one from 4/24, the other dated 5/1.

Unofficially, Zhengzhou/Henan may have five rather than 1 SARS fatality.
Also, unoffically suspected SARS carriers are being taken off the trains here as they are detected (Zhengzhou is a major junction between north-south and east-west national lines).

Here is the link to the 4/24 article. (which took a while to find).
Ther AIDS story is frightening.
The Party Bosses made such a profit from bood donors...effectively killing them most of them with AIDS from dirty needles.
...
And how much money per person 10 kuai? 30 kuai?
What's the price of a life in henan?

Perosnally, I don't believe anything any more. Neither do most people I know in Zhengzhou. Canadian doctors say the new strain of the corona virus is unlikely. Who do you want to believe, The Hong Kong Doctor under pressure from the government to find an answer, or the Canadian doctors.

One thing that is true, the paranoia is hurting the local common labourer in a bigtime way, I would say the devestation caused by the SARS paranoia is causing a hundred times the amount of damage as the actually virus. Don't people understand...everyday someone dies in henan because od an unidentified pneumonia. Of course, the more they look for it, the more they will find. Every disease in the province is under reported. Common workers are hurting bad, I mean really bad. You guys with your SARS paranoia just don't realize, people are going hungry, man! You will always have your viruses

There are two groups of people, the people who are hiding in their houses, such as the daughter of the doctor at the local military hospital (near the Yuda building in Zhengzhou), and lots of people like me, who just don't care. I do, but enough hype is enough.

Mask count... three days ago about 1 in ten people were wearing mask (WHO...no reason to wear masks in ordinary situations) Today, about one in every hundred people were wearing masks. Schools are closed, but teachers and workers still come in and go out. Students who go home a half hour away are put in quarntine. The people who work at the quarantined kindergarten where the college students are placed also work at the college itself

I don't know if the writer has ever been to Henan, but he is right about the rural hospitals...but this is a condition that has existed for years. SARS , whatever SARS may be, even if it was killing one person every day, would still not be near the most dangerous disease in Henan.

In the meantime, no exaggeration, thousand and thousands...maybe millions of people in the are are despairing as the radical statements of political leaders worrying about Beijing criticism are causing the local and migrant workers to lose their livliehood, now in what is normally the season where they work from before sunrise to long after the sun sets, as we complain about working 16 hours a week

It sickens me! Not SARS, but the ruined lives

Well, I am going to take some of the local rumors abouts SARS to heart. Tonight I'm hitting the bar and smoking my SARS away. Target Pub time.
