Yesterday (Sunday) evening I was coming home from a great afternoon in Machida, Japan. I transfer trains at Musashi Urawa. I am waiting on the platform and a train pulls in on the other side of the station. A few seconds after the packed train stops I realize that I am looking at a man servicing himself in full view of everyone else in a crowded train car. And nobody knocked him out.
A little later I was waiting for the bus at a crowded bus stop. A guy walks by with his hand down his fly. He's yanking away at himself while he's walking. Again, no reaction from anybody else but me. I didn't feel at risk (large male), just violated in some way by this criminally perverse behaviour.
And two in the span of about twenty minutes! Take it to a room, boys. |

Haha.
I've noticed a lot of kids here walk around holding their crotch. I guess these guys' parents never corrected the behavior (not suprising).
One of my coworkers had a guy unload onto a bench right next to her and noone even blinked! |

Don't even think about putting any candid photos on here.
Is sticky meant to be a pun? |

I've never seen that, but several of my friends have shared their accounts of witnessing it on trains - all of the friends were female.
In a way, though, it's funny. A culture generally thought of as closed-off and shy - then you see some guy acting lewd in public - and I can almost guarantee that if you have lived in Japan for more than a month you have seen the salarymen reading their porn newspapers, and they don't even try to hide it. They almost flaunt it, it seems. |

Actually, this sexual freedom is what attracted me to Japan!
Only Kidding...Should I be scared? What do you think would happen if a girl gave them a good telling off as I am likely to do? Oh no they might like this!!! |

Maybe the appropriate response in such a case would be to walk right up to the guy, take good, long, hard look at his *ahem*.... and start snickering..... and let the snicker slowly escalate into a hearty laugh, and finally a solid: "BWAAAAAA-HAAA-HAAAA-HAAAAA-HAAAA!!!!!!!!" all while pointing to his nether region.
Something tells me it would be a long time before he did that again. (Especially if the person doing above laughing were a woman)...
P.S. Then, if you want to add insult to injury, when you're done laughing at him, wipe the tears from your eyes, and in Japanese, ask him in a loud voice, "You're kidding right? Is that really all there is?" |

Ive only seen one instance of this and it was on a train in Tokyo and the guy doing it was mentally retarded(very obviously so). Funny thing is he was only on the train for like 4 stops.
Now here is the interesting thing: It was in the middle of the day and there was a nicely dressed girl sitting next to him. She noticed his behavior but she didn't attempt to move or to accost him etc.
I suspect the reason why is it could have had a more adverse effect. I suspect even with other guys that do these things it evokes a similar reaction because they don't want it to make things worse.
I remember reading recently some guy was in a convini and another guy was sitting on the floor in the aisle(magazine section I think). When the guy asked the one sitting down to move the guy when nuts and pulled a knife and killed the guy who had asked.
So for most Japanese, I think they feel its better to ignore than to get involved. |

If someone disrupts the status-quo, and you point that out to him, you're disrupting the status-quo by noting that the status-quo has been distrupted.

The thing is, it's seen as MORE rude to ask someone to stop doing something than the person doing the thing. |

It's very considerate isn't it? I suppose they dont want sticky seats on the trains!
I was on a late night train once where a young business woman was very drunk and had fallen asleep. Unfortunately her skirt had slipped and was crumpled up around her waist as she slouched on the seat. I could hardly believe my eyes as her underwear left nothing to the imagination and the collection of drunk business men gwafawing and playing inside their pants around her. I thought I had stumbled onto a adult film set. She miraculously awoke at her station and walked off as if nothing had happened.
I too was very drunk and wonder if this actually happened but I dont really have the imagination to dream it up. |
